alicat
How about a cattle prod wired to the warning lights 😬 You won't miss that.
F355GTS
Nige you don't want to 'produce' another belt warning system for a fellow SLR owner do you obviously delivery of lots of beer would be required to ensure productivity 😬 Mark Edited by - F355GTS on 7 Nov 2002 22:46:
Ted_7
Saw the car today. The head gasket is cooked ☹️ Now the garage is waiting for the new set of gaskets from the factory (maybe for Wednesday). Hopefully, it looks like it's (maybe) only the head gasket ! Pierre Gillet
Would it be wise to replace the head gasket of a 1997, 30 000 km, 1.6 K engine before it is being damaged by a coolant that has been replaced only once in a 5 year time period? Ted_7
You know Pierre, it's funny but I asked Elie if it would be wise to change the drive belt and the head gasket of my Seven a few months ago. For info my collegue had a head gasket failure a few months ago on its 1996 1.6K, it has less than 25.000 kms Se7enly, Ted_7
rjc
I had the same thing happen to me. It was the sender - the sensor in the radiator which sends the signal to the fan to cut in. It took 10 seconds to replace and cost £10 quid. Try that before you do anything else. Regards Rowland
Ted_7
No no, I saw the gasket, the engine is open now and we can see clearly a place where the water/oil came in/out. As I said, it was its time... RIP old gasket 😬 Se7enly, Ted_7
Sheds Moderator
Ne t'inquiet pas Pierre, it faut que tu fasses le boulot quand le moteur se cuit. (tr: Don't panic mate, do the job when it cooks) Seriously it is a really big job, and even K series don't pop too often. Not changing the coolant isn't too big a crime ( I know my old vauxhall Cav, still on its original gasket, is running 10 year old 180,000 mile coolant in the hands of my best mate, who is running it into the ground. (Quote: "F-k me Steve, it's hard as nails, I've taken it to hell and back, all the ancillaries are knackered but it keeps going, the bastard just won't roll over") When mine died the bill from the engine rebuilders was about £80 for a head strip and skim, the rest of the bill was gasket set (£75), cambelt and fluids. Why don't you save up until you want some head surgery, say porting or cams, then get it done in one go? It would save ripping it to bits just for the sake of it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
