fordy
Assuming no change is made to the rear end set up of my car, what would a change from 3/8" orange front ARB to 5/8" red front ARB make on the road?
Fred
less anti -roll on the front bar Edited by - fred on 5 Nov 2002 10:52:
fordy
you probably mean less roll. But what about understeer/oversteer characteristics etc..
scooby dooby doo
very crudely a stiffer front will mean less roll, so it will feel more responsive, but less grip. However, if it makes the car more adjustable and controllable then you may end up going faster. Welcome to the complicated world of suspension and setup (really *must* get round to reading the book I bought on the matter).... Paul Richards.
Stiffer front ARB will mean less roll at the front. This will generally mean increased understeer/less oversteer. Always remember:- Understeer = going through the hedge forwards. Oversteer = going through the hedge backwards. Paul R. C7PPR K series that starts when hot!! stevefoster
I got the Freestyle adjustable one. It is stiffest at 5/8" and softest at 3/8" and anything inbetween. Only tried it on the 5/8" setting have come down from a 3/4 bar and only on the track in a race. I liked that change. Better balance in the slowest corner, not too much feeling of oversteer. I will try it on 3/8" or prog softer from 5/8" and see how I get on esp in the wet. I would probably set it on full soft for a wet race anyway and see. It might be an idea to go for one of these as you always have your 3/8" there if you want it. /Steve My racing pics, 7 DIY, race prep. Graham Sewell
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the diameter of the old 'classic' ARB was (ie not double wishbone). It was probably fairly stout as it was a dual purpose unit providing triangulation of the upper link. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!
Stuart Faulds
What about the yellow one - isn't it around 21mm? Graham, the 'classic' one looks pretty feeble to me - probably around the blue/orange mark. Stuart
Casbar
The old arb on my live axle was 1/2". I changed it to double wishbone and a 5/8" bar.
Marc Newson
I have yellow bushes and what measured to be 19mm ARB. Perhaps the yellow has been changed to purple? CUM B48
SJL
In answer to the original question I recently changed the 3/8 standard roadsport ARB to a 5/8th's one at the recommendation of Simon Lambert at the factory (he also advised not fitting a rear ARB unless I felt it necessary after changing front). This cured understeer when turning into fast roundabouts caused by excess body roll - the car now turns in better with less roll. All in all this was a cheap and effective upgrade for a standard 1.6 roadsport with ss engine.
