Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 27, 2012 Member Share Posted August 27, 2012 I need to replace the socket I use for charging the battery and mobile 'phone. Typical cigar lighter type, bulkhead fitting. Any model you'd recommend? Thanks Jonathan

Dr Slotter
That's the one I have, albeit fitted into the unused LHD steering column boss rather than through the bulkhead.

Myles
Shame about the bulkhead fitting requirement. I tend to use 4-way units mounted under the dash...
Drumster
How about something like this? Just requires 2 small holes for nut & bolt through bulkhead.

Gordon C
Maplins do one with a rubber cap for when not in use Yep used the Maplins one myself. Installed mine in the wiper motor assy. Just needed to open up one of the holes a tad and the thing went in a treat. Out of sight and away from the weather. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x31/Gordon1962/2009_0904DriverHandlingSept090017.jpg

Q Catcher
The Caterham one is a Ford part. You can get it from any Ford dealer parts counter. About one third of the price that CC charge.
Smiffy69
They are all much of a muchness - depends on where you want to mount it, how fussy you are about how it looks etc. Being a Yachty I went to the local boat bits shop and got a good marine quality job and and inline fuse. mounted it up on the washer motor bracket so its easy to get at and nicely out of the way..... It works a treat 😬

Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 17, 2012 Author Member Share Posted September 17, 2012 Thanks for all the suggestions. Just got round to taking it all apart for a look. Came to the conclusion the poor connection was down to the existing plug from the charger. Cleaned and tweaked. We'll see. Jonathan

Bradders
How do people generally fit these, location wise? To me putting it the dash seems the most obvious, but I see the photo attached to the wiper bracket. That easy enough to do? I'd rather not drill the dash if I can help it. John Vine
If you don't want to drill the dash, you could do what I did and simply attach the socket to the underneath of the steering column with cable ties. Not great engineering, but it works. JV
Roger Ford
Or put it through the bulkhead underneath/behind the dash. Easier to connect directly to the battery that way, but less easy to connect to a switched supply if you prefer it like that (though a switched supply is no good for a battery conditioner). sjmmarsh
If you do drill the dash, this may help Steve
Dr Slotter
I discovered that the socket I bought fits perfectly in the LHD steering column boss so fitted it in there after routing the wires the the back of the tube (and ensuring adequate insulation in place). Member Jonathan Kay Posted January 31, 2013 Author Member Share Posted January 31, 2013 I put mine in the bulkhead in front of the passenger. Sounds similar to Roger's. When I put a horn button in the dash I used a sheet metal hole punch. I thought that would be easier than drilling. Any experts who know the advantages and disadvantages? Jonathan
Ian B
Large diameter punches can distort the ali dash as it's quite thin. I used a step drill like this (although it wasn't this one or this seller).
