TomB
Ive got the KV6/ SLR throttle bodies on my 1.8k. I gather there isn't an airbox available for these probably due to demand and the limited space under the bonnet. Would there be any advantage (other than imaginary) from ducting some cold air from under the front of the car (around of the front of the alternator, the RHS engine mount or somewhere below the rad)? I imagine that with the air filter close up to the bonnet it gets quite warm around the air filter which can't be good. Some cheap ducting to scoop some fresh colder air and split it out near the TB sounds worthwhile. Or at the level of performance of a road 7 with a windscreen and leather seats, is it a load of 'hot air'? (Geddit? Never mind, Ill get my coat ) Edited by - TomB on 3 Aug 2012 16:34:

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted August 3, 2012 Leadership Team Share Posted August 3, 2012 Tom, I investigated doing something similar when I had KV6's fitted - to do a full airbox with intake scoop and keep it all under the bonnet is a massive job. You could create some benefit though simply by fettling some cowling to direct fresh air to where it's needed - the nose on the 7 tends to shove everything through the radiator. Stu. gundersen
Before spending too much time on this, I would recommend measuring the difference in air temperature at the current intake location vs. the potential new location. You can expect 1% increase in power pr. 7 degrees celsius that you drop the temperature, so if you have the two temperatures you have a good approximation of what you will gain. TomB
The only thermometer I have is on my phone and Im not taping that to the engine Ill have to have think about measuring Temps.
EFA
The biggest issue is air pressure dropping at speed due to the headlamp/front wheel position. Creates a low pressure area right where you are trying to ingest air.
Myles
Don't discount taking the air from over the rad - I did a 'cool' air thing for my k-series and found the air coming over the rad was plenty cool enough for my needs (had a spare SPA temp sensor on a lead) here
TomB
I could make up something like that Myles, but without the vertical end piece so that the colder air is directed to the sausage air filter.
Myles
I did buy a spare nose with the intention of putting a Naca-style duct in it - but never got around to it and have had to abandon the mule nose when clearing out my late grandmothers lockup. gundersen
Myles did you check the intake temperature difference between the normal setup and yours?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 6, 2012 Member Share Posted August 6, 2012 Myles: Did you think about moving the air filter forward into the nose with a bit of trunking rather than using panelling? Jonathan
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 18, 2012 Member Share Posted August 18, 2012 *arrowup* *arrowup*Apparently ACBC insisted that the Lotus Cortina had a cold air intake. They went for piping from in front of the radiator. Jonathan
