Grille removal

We are talking '7' logo grilles here aren't we??

I can understand there would be a different grille required for SV bodied cars. I'd also be interested in templates or relative measurements of the various grilles, pre-91, post 91, and SV.

Cheers

Puremalt,

I have an '87 car which has its original nose cone and came with a standard grille. I fitted the '7' grille and it is not a perfect fit. For starters, the tabs on the new grille are vertical and are horizontal on the old grille. With some judicious bending in a vice you can bring the tabs round but they end up being radiused and as such make the grille slightly bigger. However, flexing the grille during fitting overcomes the problem. The fit although not perfect is not noticeable.

On the subject of grilles, I was at Caterham yesterday and saw a nice little stone protecter grille that fits behind the main grille. Probably been out ages but its the first time I noticed one in existance. Having seen some of the threads and read some enterprising ideas on how to stop rocks from damaging the rad I thought this was a good idea, and it looks very neat and sturdy.

Saw these for sale on Caterham's website about £22 (+VAT & P&P?). You can make your own for less than a fiver buying simply buying some mesh from your local DIY shop. If my memory serves me correctly this is what 7 owners have been doing for quite a few years. Nice of Caterham to catch up really 😳 😬

Or if you want the really pricey DIY option you can buy some plastic coated mesh from Halfords. It's intended for MkIII Escorts but works well as a stone catcher. About 15 quid for enough to do 2 grilles. Takes about 5mins and half a dozen tie wraps to sort it.
