zetec
It been like this for a while, its not the wheel balancing, swapped fronts to rears etc etc. Wheels balanced 3 times. Changed the calipers as one was seizing, not differance. Has anyone had a bent stub axle that has caused the same fault?
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted June 22, 2012 Area Representative Share Posted June 22, 2012 I wouldn't expect a bent stub axle to cause shake. It seems more like something is out of balance or there is play in bearings, bushes, rack etc. Also check for buckled wheel, although you seem to have eliminated this and wheel balancing by swapping front to back. prangerman
Have you checked that the wheel weights are all still there? I've lost a few of them off the front wheels and noticed a slight vibration. I now tape them on for good measure. Peter
charlie_pank
I had this a while ago. Got the wheels balanced several times before I finally got them done by someone who did their job properly and eliminated it. Might be worth checking other aspects of suspension geometry and looking for any play too though.
Pezky
If you are following Mr Beers and Eugene to France I don't think the 50-60mph vibration will be an issue
Myles
there is play in bearings, bushes, That'd be my guess if you've tried rebalancing etc. You can heave away at the suspension only so much when the car is static/on the jack - but if one of the rod-arms or something is failing, you may only find out about it when the loads increase. Have you worked out whether the vibration is 'constant' under all conditions? i.e. does it vary depending on whether you are turning left, right (both under load), going straight or braking??? And what happens at 100-120mph (the first harmonic after 50-60mph)? 😬
Stationary M25 Traveller
Check the front bearing cups are seated properly in the hubs. This would cause this. Easily done.
Ged
Do you have "heavy" locking wheel nuts fitted? It made a fair difference to mine when I replaced the heavy splined type with standard nuts.
Tony Whitley
I eventually traced mine to worn ball joints at the end of the steering rack. Not much play but it made the car rattle like a tin can ☹️
zetec
Ok, ive jacked up the car, found passenger side has play when holding wheel at 9 & 3 o clock No not steering movement just play. Then drivers side holding wheel top/bottom very slight play. Any ideas please fellas??
6speedmanual
9&3 track rod end or inner track rod joint. 12&6 upper or lower bj. Ask an assistant to induce the play whilst you feel the ball joints. My money on track rod inner end and bottom ball joint (spherical bearing) Peter

Eugene
If you are following Mr Beers and Eugene to France I don't think the 50-60mph vibration will be an issue It will only momentarily be an issue - twice... 😬 😬 😬
Eugene
Zetec, you like to run things fine... Mind you, I do need to replace my rear boots as they are a tad low on tread for a blat through France! 😬 😬 😬
Mr Locust
Once had wheels balanced a couple of times where they got progressively worse. Then the chap admitted that the machine was out of calibration and waiting for an engineer to visit. Everything was fine after going to the next garage up the road.............. paul seymour
I think the wheels will come off, ( YOU ) Mr Zetec, at breakfast. Run it down to west end they are cheap and good and have it re balanced mte.
