Non-seven related: IT help needed

Trying to boot up my PC this am all OK, back to machine lunch-time, I had a problem and the machine will not start.

Start-up begins as usual but will not open properly. I get the following error message on a blue screen:

While initialising device IFSMGR the Microsoft Installer File System manager cannot find the helper driver. Please ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed.

System Halted.

It started fine this morning. I went out for a few hours and came back to this. Incidentally my burglar alarm reports a power failure whilst I was out. I assume that this is could be responsible. If so can it be fixed / how? I'm not an IT expert so words of one syllable / not too many acronyms please!!

As always, have an important report to complete by Monday, many details of which are on this machine, so any help greatfully recieved.

Many thanks in advance. Paul

Have a look in google.com for IFSHLP.SYS - there's a few tips in there.

This is assuming you can still gain access to the net from another machine, which I geuss you can as you posted a question on here, so I guess this was a daft thing to say.

Having a great day, really ...

Ah, seems like you've had a PCF which is always VFI. Try RTPC to see if it'll CBU. If it doesn't you'll almost certainly need to ASWRKWTTA. Quite obviously, TIM. *wink*

PCF = PC Failure

VFI = Very Very Irritating

RTPC = Rebooting The PC

CBU = Come Back Up

ASWRKWTTA = Ask Someone Who Knows What They're Talking About

TIM = That Isn't Me

Seriously, I haven't a clue so I wish you good luck. *thumbup*

Disk is knackered.

Try booting 'safe mode'. I think 'F8' early in the boot process gets you a menu. I'm not very familiar with old style Windows. Other options include booting the system CD and looking to 'repair' the installation.

But I think your disk is knackered.

This from Microsoft Kbase :-

SYMPTOMS

When you restart your computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:WindowsIfshlp.sys

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:WindowsSystemVmm32.vxd

Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:WindowsSystemVmm32.vxd

While initializing device IFSMGR

The Microsoft Installable File System Manager cannot find the helper driver.

Please ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed. System halted.

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:WindowsSystemImagehlp.dll

When you receive any of these error messages, you must reboot your computer.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur for the following reasons:

An incorrect WinBootDir entry in the Msdos.sys file.

A missing or corrupted Ifshlp.sys file.

A missing or corrupted Vmm32.vxd file.

A missing or corrupted Imagehlp.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart the computer with a Windows Millennium Edition Startup disk, and then perform each step until the problem is resolved:

Modify the WinBootDir entry in the Msdos.sys file to point to the correct location of the Windows folder.

Extract a new copy of the Ifshlp.sys file to the Windows folder and extract a new copy of the Imagehlp.dll file to the WindowsSystem folder.For additional information about extracting files, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q129605 How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

If you determine that the Vmm32.vxd file is missing or corrupt, you must rename the file to Vmm32.old in the C:WindowsSystem folder, and then reinstall Windows Millennium Edition to re-create this file.
