pete east
Just a short note to anyone using weber 40 DCOE`s.Buy a synchrometer to get the balance right, then set idle mixture with a colourtune.Absolutely spot on! Did mine this way and it was like strapping on another engine! This is probably as much as you can do on carburation short of getting onto a rolling road and represents good value for money.Skilled people can probably get the same results from a carbalancer, but the synchrometer makes the job spot on accurate and can tell if the throttle spindles are bent. Legronge
Interesting, having recenyly purchased a 1.8 Zetec with the aforementioned 40's! Firstly, where does one purchase such instruments and what is likely to be the damage? Secondly, where do you obtain the relevant settings? do they come with the instruments or do you refer to manufacturers specifications? Await suggestions with anticipation!!! puremalt
Sounds good, better than the other advice I've got ref balancing. Questions as per above... Where?
Big Brother
Check out this post here Quite a few Blatchatters bought Carburettor Flow Meters from this Ferrari specialist. Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more!
Midnight
You can buy a syncrometer from Burtons in ilford Essex, price is about £49.00 with Vat.
Graham Perry
I believe those from the Ferrari specialist were very cheap in comparison to other suppliers. Its not a very complex piece of kit and if produced in large numbers should be a lot cheaper than it actually is
Joe 90
I bought mine from Weber in Sunbury. I think the secret is to strap the carbs together, so they shake in unison. I only have to rebalance them every couple of years. As standard, if one carb is up and the other is down, it twists the throttle shaft of the other carb. 99,000 miles so far
ian balson
Hi all, This ones £55, but has the advantage of measuring airflow on the engine side of the butterflys. Therefore taking into account any air correction via the bypass valves. Morgan Carbtune here Rgds Ian HPC150 ian_balson@yahoo.co.uk
eric
I bought mine at Dartford, kennet road from caterhom, caterhim caterhum or something like that ... I am very happy with, the result of the setting is obviously fantastic The price not high but I don't remember regards
Super_Rich_Bernie
Ian Does that need some tapped & plugged holes in the inlet manifold? Looks a whole lot more precise than the bit of rubber pipe I use. Jonathan
ian balson
Johnathan G, Sorry, Acutally I may have told a lie 😳 . They measure on the inlet side of the Butterflys, but the engine side of the air by-pass adjusters. So, you should get a true picture. There are four brass screws on the Webers, you remove them to allow connection of the pipes. No drilling required. If you take a look here Look at the DCOE diagram in the tuning info section. I believe from memory it's the screw at 45 degrees inside to the idle mixture screws. So, with the carbtune you can see all four throttles balance at once. Ian. Big Brother
Graham, Quote I believe those from the Ferrari specialist were very cheap in comparison to other suppliers. /Quote They are exactly the same make as Burtons and Demon Tweeks sell for around £50.00! Only these ones were £23.50 add about £2 postage. They fit virtualy all makes and sizes of carb as they are supplied with a stepped adaptor. They also have a bypass so can be used for setting the balance at high revs. The original post has plenty of satisfied Blatchatters who took advantage of this price. I am one of them. Details of this model are here (PDF format) Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more!
Drumster
I'll second Steve's comments. I think overall with VAT and postage it came to just over £28. A bargain I'd say. Just one of those satisfied blatchatters from the original post. AndreK
I'd agree with Pete, Synchrometer or equivalent (around £25) and Colourtune work well together. All assuming that there are no air leaks (always possible with rubber bobbins and O rings) and that the 'carbs are in good nick and properly jetted in the first place. Graham Perry
Thanks Steve I knew they were quite a bit cheaper but couldn't remember how much cheaper. Its quite a saving .
