Slipper man
Does anyone know who can refurbish my K series alternator? It seems ok (bearings etc) bot there is an electrical bit under the black cover that looks a bit like a fuse on which the copper wires that connect it to the alternator have melted. I a near Caterham. I have bought a new one on ebay for £75, but thought it might make sense to refurbish the original to keep as a spare
James_Russell
Jay Electrics on the A3 at Hook Rise will flog you a refurbished bosch unit which is better than the French ones at a very reasonable price and with a years warrantee It's a good old fashioned place ran by a good old fashioned bloke. The Pikey
I'd find out if it's the regulator or diode pack that has melted and order the parts on EBay. I guess it's a Lucas or Lucas style alternator so if you type in Lucas diode pack or Lucas rectifier or Lucas regulator in the search I'm sure you will find the part you need. millsn
you can get them for around £43, I wouldn't bother with the refurb
Slipper man
Its actually a magnetti marelli part. I will look up the bits on ebay as suggested though
Racingshoe
I got my Magnetti Marelli regulator on ebay for a few quid. Worked perfectly after a 5 min repair (plus 2 sodding hours to get the alternator off & on the car) 😬
Myles
you can get them for around £43, I wouldn't bother with the refurb You can get what for £43? Diode packs/regulators? I think I need to get my alternator sorted - just not sure what's the best way to do it (give it to a man, try it myself, buy a replacement...)? David Brown
Got a refurbed alternator from company in Bellshill on exchange, can get details if you wish.
Myles
Would be interested in the cost, David. I'll probably take it to someone locally though, but it would be helpful to know if what they'll charge me is TGTBT or OTT!
David Brown
Myles, from memory it was £65. First replacement one had b***rd bearings which took a while to diagnose as I had fitted a heatshield under the manifold and I was convinced it must be rattling. Then had to repeat the exercise of jacking up engine, removing mount, removing primaries, etc. Just remembered that the original was cooked on the run we did down from Durness to Ullapool after some sustained "autobahn" stretches. Myles
Thanks - is the k-series standard alternator actually from a k-series? Just wondering what to say to 'them' when I call to check for details...
skydragon
You can get brand new (new, boxed, not refurbished) genuine rover spares Bosch alternators on ebay for £72 currently. I bought one last week, mint shiny new, worked a treat!

Myles
SD - final question, for now - how many pins/leads does your new one have on the plug? I seem to remember that certain flavours (EU3 compared to EU2?) have an extra lead...? My current alternator is EU3, I think.
skydragon
My car is a 2003 Eu3 the alternator connector has two pins

David Brown
Myles, it is worth getting the end cap rotated 180deg to move the terminals from the exhaust. Described here somewhere if you do a search.
Terry Field
Try Curd Bros, Colebrook Industrial Estate (North Farm, Tunbridge Wells) 01982 525398. They refurbed mine of £50 and did a brilliant job; it came back like new - one of the old school experts Terry
