It's a 1988 1.6 Gti, sunroof, non-power assisted steering. Red, with pepper pot alloys.

1988 Peugeot 205 Gti 1.6

11 Month MOT, 5 month Tax

115k miles. Non- PAS, sun roof.

Now I have a Caterham this just isn’t being used enough so will have to go. I've prevaricated about selling for the last 6 months, but now it really does have to be sold. I’ve owned it for almost 3 years and its been a cracking car - just not being used enough.

Car is in good condition for its age with less rust than most and a very solid shell.

On purchase I had some corrective work carried out by a 205 specialist:

New top mounts and bearings

New front disks and pads

New clutch cable

New spark plugs

More recently it has had:

New radiator hoses

New HT leads

New starter motor

New Battery

New motor for washer jet

Re - ground cylinder head, new gaskets.

Minimal history prior to my purchase but car appears to have been well looked after, a very tidy original car. Interior is smart with very little wear (for a car of this age).

Bad bits:

- Paintwork is showing it’s age in some areas (see photos)

- Some paintchips and scratches around the front of the car

All in all a great car that will make someone very happy.

Photos can be seen here which shows the good bits and the bad bits.

(taken on a rainy day – look even better after thorough clean and polish)

Priced now reduced to sell

Please can somebody buy this car, this surely is the steal of the century in petrolheadom.

It needs to be sold so that I don't have this advert waved in front of me telling me to buy it and stick learner drivers in it so that I can justify it to the wife.

We all know (as 7 owners) that this was actually the best hot hatch ever made, that the 1.6 was a much sweeter car than the 1.9.

Dicks

Lurk, will show this add to my 77 year old mum she had two Pug GTI's loved the 1.6 the most over the 1.9 and is carless for the first time and is regretting it, she might be tempted.

Mmm lovely *smile*. I had 2x 1.6GTis in the mid-eighties, both non-PAS. I reckon the nearest a tintop has ever got to the steering feel of a Seven. I'd have it a moment but If I bought another 'needy' car, divorce would ensue. And I've got nowhere to hide it up ☹️.

"If you drove one now with no nostalgia and no context how would it stack up against a modern cheap hot hatchback?"

Very well, IMO.

I bought a really nice 205 GTi a couple of years ago, and I was astonished how much fun it was - better in lots of ways than most of today's offerings.

But, modern cars tend to have more comforts and conveniences for everyday use. So, I decided to see if there really is a current equivalent of the 205 GTi, and tried all the options. My conclusion was the Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup is the nearest - but you'd spent over £10k + for one.

There seem to be two markets for the 205 GTi:

- Those who want a 'future classic' - so the car needs to be immaculate, original, fsh, low mileage, etc, and these start around £3k ++.

- Those who want a cheap, reliable, fun, run-around that will deliver lots of thrills for little money. These are £1-2k and, bought wisely and looked after, can be terrific value.

See

for an accurate summary. *wink*

(ps - I did eventually swap mine for a Clio 200 Cup)

Agree about the two markets, with a bit of work this be in the first category although I suspect lack of history prior to myownership may hurt it.

It really is great fun, ended up taking first the Caterham and then the 205 down the same stretch of road a couple of hours apart on the weekend. Whilst the Caterham was obviously faster and more of a buzz, the 205 was great fun and on the bumpier sections just as fast and no worries about grounding - it flowed beautifully (suspension is softer than modern cars where the marketting teams seem to think stiff=sporty).

If someone doesn't buy it soon I may have to do what my other half keeps on telling me and keep it!
