R300 foam baffle sump

Recommended Posts

Morning guys,

My 2002 R300 is due a service and i have been advised by my local 7 specialist that the car doesn't need the foam baffle sump replacing, the foam can be left out completely, car has an appollo tank fitted, does this sound right ??

I'm a comletely clueless with anything mechanical so wanted to get advise on here before going ahead with it.

Get rid & never ever replace. I have recently taken mine out & feel a lot happier without it.

One of our guys from Penn has just spent a not inconsiderable amount on an engine rebuild due to the foam breaking up & clogging the oil pump pick up - result = an expensive & totally avoidable rebuild.

After a few thousand miles the foam becomes brittle and can/will fall apart.

I noticed a dip in oil pressure (which I nearly ignored due to a known faulty oil pressure sender) so took the sump off and found the strainer totally clogged with the remains of the foam baffle.

I refitted the sump without the baffle and moved over to a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Dump the foam and put a couple of holes in the sump gasket over the oil pickup to allow oil to drain into the sump more easily. You must be the only one of the LADS who still has foam in the sump.

By the way, who do you use for service?

Bin it .................horrible stuff serves no purpose other than to clog my engine up. amazing how much damage an £8 part can cause. Been foam free for 3 years with no problems,

£8???? I seem to recall the last one I bought was £12 plus P&P and that's a good few years ago.
