Alan Bowler
Looking for a cheap estate car, or possibly 4x4, for towing the 7 and filling with bikes etc. Anyone about to trade in something suitable? Thanks Edited by - alan bowler on 3 Mar 2012 17:52:17 Edited by - Alan bowler on 7 Mar 2012 20:30:
Alan Bowler
Bttt Am narrowing it down to an estate, ideally manual, petrol - something like an audi A4 or a 3 series BMW, around £4k. Rather than pistonheads and fleabay (not keen) anyone know a good dealer in the south east?
Titanium7
Oops, just sold the wifes 2004 CRV tonight, would have been ideal for what you need.
CharlesElliott
A4/BMW are going to be more expensive than, for example, a Mondeo, Honda Accord Aerodeck or (bargain of the moment) Saab 9-3 or 9-5 estate. I just bought an A6 Avant with 125K miles and 10 years old for 4K.....
Alan Bowler
Hi Charles - yes, my £ would go further with a Mondeo, but there appears to be some badge snobbery in our corner of Surrey. Tempted by Subarus, but not keen on Saabs at all. Found this A4 via Pistonheads: here in Cobham. Anyone dealt with "Baker Brothers of Surrey"? CharlesElliott
Of course dahling 😬 Nope, not come across them. Don't recognise those conifers either!
rj
If you want to use it as a tow car you'll want more than 100bhp 4k is not exactly cheap for that car An A4 (8E B6/B7) is only 1 (one) cm wider than a Skoda Fabia MK1, so it will not take very many bikes in the boot. It is a nice drive though.
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted March 9, 2012 Area Representative Share Posted March 9, 2012 there appears to be some badge snobbery in our corner of Surrey You astonish me! (but I think the same could apply to my corner of Herts)
Nifty
Alan, I've a 1999 Discovery TD5 for considerably less than £4K ... £2.5Kish with a spare set of road wheels and currently fitted with BFGs. I've been on the drag getting it sold so it's now due a new MoT so will have 12 months + Tax. Adjustable drawbar suitable for low hitch trailers (Minno). If you're interested drop me a Blatmail and I'll send some pics and more details etc. Nifty.
Alan Bowler
Good point on the audi bhp - will skip that one. Nifty -thanks for the offer but am now looking at estates. Current favourite is subaru legacy, but not too many around. Charles - do they allow cars over 3 years old in weybridge? I thought there was a bylaw. TobyCoulson
Whatever you get if it costs less than £4k can you keep out of Cobham please as we do have standards to maintain On a serious note why not get a WRX 5 door?
ric355
Quoting Alan Bowler: Anyone dealt with "Baker Brothers of Surrey"? Yes Alan - I bought a Range Rover from them in early 2011. It was nicely prepared and everything was in order. The owner, Russell, is one of those people who is extremely busy and has a tendency to let things lapse if you don't keep on top of him but I would still recommend him based on my experiences. He will lowball you on any part-ex and then agree a higher price ultimately but then name me a dealer that doesn't. The row of conifers is the driveway to his house where he photographs most of the cars. The green steel building in the background of some of the photos is the place where he stores his stock. He's appointment only, and is based near Silvermere golf course which is between Brooklands and the A3.
Dickie Normuss
I bought one of these six months ago. They look OK and go quite well 😬 You will need your own tanker though as they like a drink...... 😳
Roger Ford
On a serious note why not get a WRX 5 door? Because they do 16mpg towing. Or 11 if you floor it. If you try really, really hard you can get 18, but I only managed that once.
Alan Bowler
Impreza isn't on Claygate Parish Council (Tory/Whig coalition) approved list. Neither is Ford ST anything. Hmmm - am I going to get the same appalling mpg from a 2.0 or 2.5l Subaru Legacy? I can cope with poor mpg as I won't be doing that many miles, but 16mpg is very poor. robmar
Alan - as mentioned elsewhere I get around 30 mpg towing in a 2.5 Subaru if I stick to 60ish There is no turbo on the legacy hence whey economy is so much better than the WRX, I suspect. rob
CharlesElliott
My A6 is a 2.5l V6 diesel, 180 bhp. Now I'm spending much more money than is sensible having it turned into a 6K car that's still only worth 4K.
adwyer
Hi Alan, I've just advertised my Subaru Legacy Estate for sale if you're still looking?
