Removing flywheel bolts

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Please excuse my numpty question.........

I need to remove the flywheel from my K-series engine which is already out of the car.

How can I lock the flywheel so I can undo the bolts ? As using a single socket wrench

The flywheel turns. I have also tried using another wrench on another bolt to stop the

Turning motion but the Bolts are too tightly torqued ?

Help !

Cheers

Mark

I did this recently on my Zetec with the help of a friend. I rested the engine on a piece of 3 x 2 timber so the ring gear teeth were biting into it. On its own the wood would not hold it tight but then I enlisted a friend wearing stout boots, he braced the ring gear with the sole of his boot, and his heel pressing on the timber, while I used a long wrench on the bolts. Not elegant but it worked.

Or of course an air wrench will do the job.

If it's K series, stick a screwdriver in between the ring teeth, and clamp it to the lump of metal sticking out the side. worked for me recently.

And don't forget to get new bolts, with the right blue stiff coating on it or you'll get oil through and contaminate the clutch.
