Where the 10th digit of the VIN is equal to or less than 'W' and the 6th digit is 'C' or 'K', the vehicle concerned should be considered as 'amateur built' and as such should receive a visual smoke test only I meet all the other criteria, but my 10th vin character is the didgit '1', is that greater or less than 'W'? Phil B Posted February 6, 2012 Share Posted February 6, 2012 Confused, my 10th digit is R and my 6th is 4, but the car was built in 1985. I think I have a Chassis number not a VIN code. If it is 2001, as suggested above, then it will have been through SVA and therefore will need to pass an emissions test. Some MOT testers may not understand the rules correctly and let you get away with a no visible smoke test. MOT emissions test flowchart. I think that unless you have an engine for which you can prove the age (e.g. letter from manufacturer) takes it prior to emissions testing then the answer is as per the time the car was SVA'd.
