Stationary M25 Traveller
Type 9 box on a 2002 build. Speedo dropped to zero every time I accelerated hard today. Had a look under the car when I got home. The sender unit seemed a bit loose. Held the body of it to stop it turning, and tightened the swivel collar. It never really seems to get to a point where it goes tight ? Should it ?
Support Team c7trp Posted January 29, 2012 Support Team Share Posted January 29, 2012 IIRC the collar is located in the 'box by a circlip, and is free to rotate. (The collar is a 'top hat' shaped in section) HTH
Stationary M25 Traveller
It definitely seems to screw on to a thread on the gearbox. That is also what I remember when replacing it a couple of years ago - but why doesn't it stop turning ?
mic
The thread part (top hat) is retained by a circlip, there is nothing to stop it turnining. Edited by - mic on 29 Jan 2012 17:47:
Stationary M25 Traveller
Ok - thanks - will have to raise the car and have a proper look.
Stationary M25 Traveller
http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/img/p/1008-1008-thickbox.jpgWhat I am trying to say is ...... the screw collar pictured screws on to a male thread in the side of the gearbox. Whatever it starts to screw on to seems to rotate too, so it doesn't seem to screw home and stop ?
mic
Its the male part that is held by the circlip.
Support Team c7trp Posted January 29, 2012 Support Team Share Posted January 29, 2012 Jam the flange of male bit of the thread with a small screwdriver to stop it turning whilst screwing the speedo sensor on. The bit you are screwing the sensor onto looks like this I don't think it needs to be very tight. Make sure the threads are clean to make it easier! Shad
Alternatively, remove the circlip so the adapter can come out, fasten the two together on the bench where you can get them done up properly, then fit back to the gearbox with the circlip
stevethemook
I found the Circlip holding the top hat is a bugger to get back on.. Just for info for anybody else ..My speedo packed up altogether and I removed the sensor /top hat to find the quill on the end of the sensor broken off and jammed into the gearbox.Put the top hat back and then sent my speedo off to Speedy Cables to convert it to use a sensor off the front wheel hub. Takes 4 weeks to do the conversion /its not cheap but easier than whipping out the box. steve
