Nail polish remover used to be acetone, sometimes with a few additives.

 

The over the counter stuff isn't based on acetone any more. I thought the change was to avoid sniffing, but Wikipedia suggests it was because acetone removed artificial nails. It also says that most of it is now based on ethyl acetate. That wouldn't be anywhere near as effective for workshop purposes.

 

Remember not to get acetone near valuable plastics etc.
