Trivial Question Regarding Escort Rear Axles

Yes two types of Axle were fitted to the Ersort Mark 1 & 2 the salisbury type and the Timken type.

In simple terms the Timken axle is the one you want.

The difference is pretty clear. The Timken axle has the removable diff carrier identified by the forward facing bolt on differential assembly i.e the diff can be removed from the axle complete with carrier. The Salisbury diff is removed through the rear of the diff. as the diff cover is removable.

The timken axle was found on 1100, 1300 and 1600 and 2000 escorts cars and on some vans. The Salisbury one was only found on 1100 and 1300 escorts. the timken diff also has a wider range of ratios

Hope this helps

Good anorak stuff here. All my formative garage years were spent under Escorts and I've never seen anything but what you call a Timken axle and I call an English axle (diff comes out forwards with the axle nose). The mkI escort Haynes manual only lists this type.

The only other axles fitted in my experience were what I call Atlas axles fitted to rally cars because they're wider and stronger and sourced from 3.0 litre Capris. These have a cover on the back and the diff mechanism comes out thro here, what you call Salisbury type.

Regarding the names, of course Timken and Salisbury are the manufacturing companies while Atlas / English are descriptions so most likely Timken made the English axles and Salisbury made the Atlas.

The conclusion doesn't change though, Peardrop you need an English / Timken axle. If you go in a scrapyard and find an escort, mkI or mkII, I think it's 99.99% likely that it'll have one of these in it.

peardrop, It is in your intrest when ordering a starter kit that you say that you will run a Escort axle becuase the tunnel needs modifying to have a little bit more space between chassis and propshaft also if you know what engine, exhaust & suspension you will have caterham will draw the holes on the ali panels.

BTW the Salisbury is far more heavy than the English axle.

The best bet for brackets would be to take it to one of the companies that Caterham use / used to mod these axles when they were available as an option. They will have the jigs to fit them in the right place. Not sure who did the Ford axles but I know SPC in Redditch still do mod the Ital axles for current live axle cars so I'd try them first, 01527 894232. Also worth asking Arch, fair chance they're set up to do it too.

I had my escort axle modified by Arch Motors did an excellent job and powder coated axle as well. Cost about £150. The contact is Bruce Robinson who is a really helpful guy soory do not have phone number to hand but is is in Low Flying.

I did my own mods to the transmission tunnel

Email me if I can be of any help.
