1.4SS ruddy good service

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a car 55K miles 1.4SS

First job is obviously to give the car a tip top service before I wrap it around the first tree.

I'm thinking so far that the

bilsteins are probably seen better days - upgrade as necessary

the cam belt will need changing

filter and fluid changes all round

good brake inspection - upgrade as necessary

rear bushes being done at the moment

What else should I check/topup/change/upgrade etc...

Rears looked in good nick, chassis rails seemed ok etc..

Front was less good, powder coating long gone - lots of surface rust - nothing serious I think - just needs attending too

Any recomendations on how to make good chassis without stripping and sending back to arch?

I was planning on flapwheeling all the rust away and then daubing on various rust stabilisers - zinc paints and hamerites etc...

Advice greatfuly received

Found Hammerite/Smoothrite not really up to the job. Too easy to leave a pin hole through which the rust starts again etc.

I have used 'POR 15' available from Frosts to be very good. POR stands for 'Paint-On-Rust' (the 15?........ how many variations to get it right? Like WD 40 being the 40th water displacer tried!) and you really don't have to get the metal back to bare state. In fact, the recommend NOT to. It applies well and seems to do a good job.

Have used it on the rear 'A' frame etc.

POR sticks really well on rusty stuff after a stiff wire brushing. it doesn't stick on bare metal so well and will start coming off after a year or so of stones attacking it. It doesn't flake off like the powder coat though.

I think they sell an undercoat for bare metal applications. Forsts are at here

HOOPY Today I shall be mostly wanting to go for a blat R706KGU
