Sheds Moderator
Road and Rade Transmissions will do it, I'd imagine. I think you now have the usual list!

captain chaos
if it's the sequential..Quaife are now passing this work onto Mr Gearbox in Dunstable. They do all types of gearboxes. If Phil (R&R) could fit the work in, thats who i would trust to do a 1st class job.
DaveMorris
Just spent a morning with Steve at SPC with 2 of my gearboxes having a bit of work done. Can't rate his work, or knowledgge, highly enough (though he does have an ability to keep you there chatting for longer than you had planned ) Dave. keybaud
Does anyone have a ball-park figure for gearbox rebuilds? I have an old, 5-speed, straight-cut Qaife, but the gear changes aren't as smooth (or as quick) as they could be, so I assume that it needs a spot of TLC. Sheds Moderator
I understand that RRT/SPC will take a Type 9, recondition it and fit a revised gear ratio for about £500. I would expect a comprehensive rebuild for this sort of money, and I have no doubt that you get one. Unless Quaife are a special case and/or their parts cripplingly expensive I would imagine that their costs are broadly similar. Certainly RRT/SPC won't get excited, to them a gearbox is a gearbox, the designs may differ but a replacement bearing or synchro ring is a replacement bearing or synchro ring. The box can say Quaife, Timken or SKF, it's just an industrial bearing to the appropriate spec, mass produced by the million and used in machines everywhere. catastrada
The gearbox that I had rebuilt by Road and Race is a 5 speed t9 case with Quaife straight-cut internals. Road and Race is rebuilding a gearbox for £150 flat labor fee plus the new parts. So rebuilt will cost you around £500 on average and up to £1,000 if it has heavy issues (my case). In the same time i had the main case replaced with an alloy case (minus 4kg + a draing plug)

Mankee
Have a crack at it yourself. Just don't leave it too long between dismantling and rebuilding like I've done and forget where everything goes as it's all piled into cupboards in the garage. You can get a set of 5 (for a normal Type 9) standard syncro rings for £60 and a full set of bearings and gaskets for £120 from these guys. Also, BGH Geartech are great guys and can supply everything you need to rebuild, as well as offer excellent little tips and tricks to help with the rebuild. I'm brave enough to do it myself, it's the competence bit that I'm worried about. Does anyone know where to get a T9 manual or suitable document to see how they go together etc? Also, does the gearbox need to be removed from the car before it gets taken to someone to rebuild or do they usually remove it and then replace it afterwards? Mankee
I've got some useful literature on another laptop for the Type 9 box, one of which is a PDF version of a manual from a well-known publisher that rhymes with stains... I have no idea where I downloaded it from, but let me know if you want it, as well as anything else useful Type 9-related, and I'll upload it for you. Most transmission specialists will want just the box to work on, rather than having to remove the box, strip and rebuild it and then put it back in the car for you. I've done that before (not for a Caterham) and it makes for a very long day indeed. I guess some specialists might be able to outsource the job of removing and refitting the box to a local garage or similar.
Paul McKenzie
Personally, I wouldn't attempt a rebuild myself even if I had access to a press, gear pullers etc If you want it overhauled you need to take it out of the car for R&R, SPC etc...doubtless Caterham would offer removal/refitting, but you'd be looking at 6-10 hours labour, and I guess they'd send it on to R&R.
