Mike Bees
A 5-speed box with decent ratios will be fine with a 1.8K. Some specialist 7 insurers only care about the size of the engine, not the state of tune. Can't remember which ones.. maybe Footman James and/or Osbornes. tom7
Ol, I currently have a standard 1.8K mated to the type 9 5 speed, whilst I am sure there are performance gains to be had with a six speed, I am perfectly happy. As there is little point revving the std 1.8 beyond 6000rpm, a 6 speed would be wasted without better cams. 5 speed doesn't slow me dowm too much acceleration-wise as the torque of the 1.8 compensates on the road. From a standing start I managed 2.33 seconds to 64 feet at Curboro' on hard Avon ZV1's, so it hasn't slowed me down there either. Go for the engine change to get your performance gains. Ol
Thanks for advice, standard 1.8k route looking more tempting. Re-posted to Techtalk
