Steve-B
Why would one buythis one from Screwfix When this one this one here from Halfrauds is 1/2 the price It looks to me on closer examination to be almost identical units
Alan Reeves
My guess is neither as they are not roller bearings of the drawers? Certainly the Screwfix one isnt.
Grubbster
They are almost identical - I have 1 of the halfords ones and 2 of the other (from Norms bulk buy a few years ago). Cheap and cheerful but do the job in my garage.
Sheds Moderator
The choice would be harder with the Halfords one at "normal" price. £60 is a steal, I paid that from Norm's bulk buy in 2005-2006 for one identical to the MM one. All I need now is a garage to put it in.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 17, 2011 Member Share Posted December 17, 2011 As above: the big question is whether you want to pay extra and have drawers on bearings. You can add dividers and liners later. Also worth checking Machine Mart Is there a Club discount on all Halfords stuff? Jonathan
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted December 17, 2011 Area Representative Share Posted December 17, 2011 Jonathan Yes, because you buy vouchers at a discount, they are worth full value at the store. I don't know how it works over the web. Edited by - Golf Juliet Tango on 19 Dec 2011 21:46:
Steve-B
I think I'm going to take Santa by Halfrauds today and collect one if she's in a good mood thanks guys!
Alan Reeves
Steve what is the reason for not spelling Halfords correctly, d
Myles
HF used to be commonly referred to on BC using Steve-B's spelling until a year or two back. For me, the reasons are lost in the mists of time - might have been due in part to a 'computer says no' attitude if you didn't know exactly what the original donor car was for the part you were trying to source... Given the support they give the club through the discount scheme, I haven't referred to them that way for some considerable time.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted December 19, 2011 Leadership Team Share Posted December 19, 2011 Save your money and buy units with proper bearing sliders on the drawers Stu.
Grubbster
At the momentt you can get a top and bottom drawer set in halfords pro range for under £200 (I think it worked out about £185 with the discounts on offer) then you can get an extra 10% with the club discount. Quite tempted to get 3 sets for about £500! Edited by - Grubbster on 20 Dec 2011 06:58:
Roger Ford
I was going to recommend the Machine Mart HD-Plus range, but they seem to have got seriously expensive. The 7-drawer cabinet is now 300 quid (if you don't buy on a VAT-free day). Mine's done brilliantly over the last 11 years or so, but not sure I'd buy another at that price. Andy Harris
I've just bought the Halfords Pro 5 draw cabinet and 7 draw chest for the £200 offer they're doing. Ball bearing draws and free draw liners and top mat. Seems way cheaper than Screwfix, Machine Mart etc and good quality. Think it's worth the extra for the ball bearings; the draws on the cheaper range really feel "cheaper". Buying a Seven is such a great excuse for lots of new tools and shiny red metal boxes Andy. TomB
Ill second the above poster - I bought a set as a house warming present, to me, before I moved into my new house! I then put them in storage for a month, but thats a different matter . Anyway, the professional range cabinets are significantly better, and if you can wait/ save up a bit more, Id really recommend them over the original linked item. I spent about an hour in Halfords getting different types out of boxes and generally annoying the staff, and I decided spending more was the better choice this time. If you need any more justification, look at the RRP and just pretend that it the price they usually sell at! PS - Ive had a dig on the HF website and this is the offer I bought mine at - drawer unit and bottom wheeled cabinet for £200 when bought together. Go on you know you want to ed by - TomB on 19 Dec 2011 21:28:20 Edited by - TomB on 19 Dec 2011 21:29:
Drumster
Another one going to take up the Halfords offer, just waiting for their vouchers to arrive.... Total cost with offer and vouchers approx £
Stuart Miller 7
Snap-on...... Facom.. maybe Britool? You do get what you pay for. Saying that, if it's for the garage and not professional, I have a couple of Clarke HDplus chests which have provided very good service over the years. Definately worth having roller bearings though. Currently sat empty in my garage.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted December 20, 2011 Leadership Team Share Posted December 20, 2011 When you get some weight in the drawers, not-bearing runners are a complete waste of time. Add in a little crap over time and they get even worse. Quality work surface (I've gone for 40mm thick Beech stave) and good quality cabinets define a garage Oh, and don't forget to fit some quality flooring as well 😬 Stu. 7 wonders of the world
My oldest top box is a Facom one from way back, no rollers hear just greased siders, no fuss, very reliable, Personally I'd spent the 'upgrade to roller draws' money on tools.
