Autogylm Lotus 7 Club 2011 Speed Championship...

84 Competitors competed in the 2011 Lotus 7 Club speed championship sponsored by Autoglym, encompassing 16 events starting in April at Silverstone and ending at Anglesey in October.

There was a minor tweak to this year’s scoring for the overall champion and as class 3 had not yet been decided until the final weekend at Anglesey we were unable to crown a champion until that was resolved. But following the event we are able to confirm that for the 2nd successive year Chris Howard-Harris is the overall champion with a series of record breaking runs throughout the season. No one has even managed to retain the individual champion crown which makes Chris’s efforts all the more impressive. Runner up was last year’s novice champion Tom Price with Paul Boston in third.

We had 8 ladies competing for the ladies competition this year and Lynn Gilbert made it a hat-trick of championships with Suzanne Gibson runner up and Judith Hickey in 3rd.

The novice championship was only contested by 4 drivers this year and Chris Johnson came out as the clear winner from the only other driver who completed 5 rounds Jeremy Davies.

Most of the class winners had been decided before the final weekend but there where tight contests for the minor placings.

In class 1 Paul Boston was already the champion and elected not to enter, however Alan Johnson and Paul Brown did and subsequently picked up 2nd and 3rd spots respectively, pushing Robert Jacobs down to 4th.

Matthew Jenkins retained his class 2 championship back in August and Jon Ward with a double win at Anglesey jumped into the runners up spot. Robert Spencer just pipped Graham Howard and Paul Collins by less than 0.5 points in a close battle for 3rd.

Class 3 was the only undecided class heading into the final rounds with 3 drivers David Nelson, and father and son Richard and Tom Price all vying for the class 3 crown. David decided not to enter and so it was left to Tom Price last year’s novice champion to pick up the class win with a couple of strong performances over the weekend. Richard was unable to make it a family one two at the top and finished 3rd behind David.

Chris Howard-Harris retained his class 4 championship prior to the last event with Stuart Miller doing enough on the Saturday with a class win to take the runners up spot with Shaun Elwell taking 3rd.

None of the front runners in class 5 turned up and the top 3 places where all sorted at Wiscombe, with Mark Durrant taking the title to add to his prior class 2 & 4 championships. Simon Rogers ended up 2nd after ending his season early with Rob Margel 3rd.

No one competed enough rounds in class 6 to qualify.

Congratulations to all winners and competitors and we look forward to seeing you next year, or sooner at the awards dinner in November.

Rob
