andy_h
I appear to have developed an engine rattle on my 2.0VX. It's coming from the zorst manafold area, behind the alternator and noticeble when the revs are dropping after a rev blip. Looked all over but nothing loose, and when I but my head close when I blip the revs (on carbs not that it makes much difference) it does sound like it's in the head. Any ideas? Bio
Have you checked the tightness of all the alternator mounting bolts 🤔....or remove the alternator belt and try again. John
Dickie Normuss
I had the same issue, turned out the N/S alternator mount had cracked about 75% of the way around where the alternator mounting point is and it was the alternator vibrating
k.russell
as Ric says check your bracket, this is how mine was cracking
I reply to every thread
It's not the plug insert is it?
andy_h
Thanks guys, I'll check the alternator bracket. Aves, do you mean the blanking plug in the side of the block? Cheers, Andy
ECR
I think Matthew is refering to the L shaped cover over the spark plugs ...
Mavic82
Not really a rattle but worth checking the underside of number one primary. They have a habit of cracking. Do you have the cam cover baffle mod? If not could the baffle be loose? Guy
captain chaos
sounds like the alternator bracket (as mentioned above),,typical Vx achilles heel..

andy_h
Well it's not the spark plug cover, nor can I find a crack in the primarys. Looks like I'll need to remove the alternator bracket, but that'll be another day. Edited by - andy_h on 8 Oct 2011 17:05:
ECR
Just to be clear, It's the engine mount that cracks where the lower alternator bolt passes through it....
andy_h
Yep, already noted thanks. I didn't notice a crack in it when I had the engine out few months ago when I checked and re-painted the engine mount brackets. May need to borrow some thin blood as pic above to check 😬
EFA
Remember the plug cover bolts can be tight and the cover still loose! Shorter bolts or washers between the cover and the head solve the problem.
captain chaos
Can I add that both my engine mount AND my alternator casing bracket cracked so I'd advise to check both.... My alternator needed replacing and I was on the way back from the Ring. Managed to find a factor who spent literally an hour going thru all his stock and eventually found one identical to the lucas part that came off...it was on their listing as only suitable for a Land rover!..typical CC parts bin approach of the 90's.
