Mad new cam cover - bulk buy?

Blimy.. here's me, trying to scrimp and save on the amount of Ali to save every last gram and you have the nerve to add some 'trim'. 😬

Production wise, it is a very bad move to make it out of solid billet - it's gonna coast loads.... bit of a pipe dream I fear guys. Now, if somone can form it in C/F.....

You mean you can drive these?

I thought it was just there to polish 😬

As mentioned here or somewhere else, you need to speak with Mick Cooper in Nottingham. I'm sure he can make them up. He's responsible for the CF Westy Geefin owned/owns (dunno if he's sold it) and the quality of his CF is superb.

Personally, I wish Arnie could produce rear wings with this block moulded in. That would be the absolute best option, but I can't even afford his latest "normal" arches so I'd be even more unable to afford modified ones. ☹️

I'm not convinced ali is the right material for these light clusters. Perhaps we ought to be looking into replacing the whole shebang with LED light clusters? Weight saving all round and longer life components.

To be honest, I think you are right Nige, the std cluster is a bit of a 'bodge' really.

However, I don't know where to start looking for suitable LED clusters, in the right colours and sizes that will match the wiring looms as well. Any ideas?

I'm happy to model anything anyone comes up with....

As for mne, well I am just spraying the black rubber to suit the colour of the car, with some lightening by removing internal rubber that I think is not required. But that is because I is as skint as a skint thing ☹️

I've been looking through the mountainous number of catalogues RS gives away nowadays. Nothing jumped out at me. VWP is also similarly bereft of ready-made LED products.

I'll keep looking. Might be a bit of a specialist product though as we've got not exactly run of the mill cars.

Julian, any news on the first batch of cam covers me ol' mate? Had a couple of "bad car days" whilst trying to rebuild V7, and I could use some nice new kit to make me happy with it again.

Also, I'm trying to construct a dry sump pump belt tension wheel monitor (to give it its official title) and I find myself in need of a particular bolt/nut combination that I can't find in RS.

I need an M2 x 20mm (anything longer than 15mm is OK), preferably with an allen key head. I found one amongst my garage-clutter, but can't find another. RS only do M2 up to 12mm, which is far to short. If anyone can help I'll be able to finish my bracket and switch, and then I'll be able to publish a template of the bracket and details of where I obtained the bits.

Thanks.

Doh..!! It was an M3 x 20mm and I've found some in RS after all. Bought a box of 'em.

Finished my dry sump pump tension wheel monitoring system (grand name for a switch bracket), and have taken some piccies if anyone's interested. Mail me direct.

try having a look at this place under hella lights guys. I know that hella have got car lights already but i don't know where you would get them from.

also be carefull as most LED lights probably won't meet uk law which specifies min/max wattage of lights not actual light power, ie LED lights maybe bright enough but may not pull enough power to meet the letter of the law. there's been the same problem on cycles for ages *confused*

STATUS: Having discussed our requirements with his metal stock supplier Tony has elected to use what he describes as "the version of HE30 that produces better results when anodised". Apparantly ordinary HE30 leaves a lot of swirl marks in it when you anodise it. Anyhow, the material is here and a start has been made. I suffered a bit of a heart attack when I found out the bloody anodiser is in sodding Yorkshire - I had not budgeted for carriage sending about 12kg's of camcovers by carrier! Anyhow, I twisted Tony's arm a bit and I've got to go down that way shortly so now I'm pressing him to get the anodised ones done as a batch. He is going to make the non anodised ones first though. Also I suffered a bit of a setback when some inconsiderate git placed an order with him for 300 random hospital parts that he makes. Don't they realise that 7's are more important? Anyhow, I'll keep posting back as the sack of swarf gets fuller!

Cheers

Nige, there are 3 covers (yours is one of them) that need no anodisation and so will not be subject to the extra faffing that this entails.

I'd hate to commit to a date but for sure yours will be significantly sooner than these others.

I have a meeting later today with Tony about Mark Boardman's all singing, all dancing timing adjustment cover, so I will raise the issue of timescales with him at the same time !

Cheers

Yes, me too!

Mark has measured everything under the cover carefully; the finished article will have 2 blanking plugs when in use. When you want to time the cams, you just screw your dial guage into the threads of the cover and take a reading ! Awesome. Tony is making an adaptor that will fit to Mark's dial guage using a grub screw to lock it. This will be left fitted to the dial guage most probably, so that it is a 3 minute job to check the timing!

I might just get one of these covers myself but it'll tempt me into tinkering which I don't know enough about! And also, my car is just running soooooooooooooo well right now that I am loathed to touch it!

Hmm... don't know if you've seen Dave Walker's 3 digital dial gauges and the adapter brackets he made for them? I spent ages trying to time my cams in with a single dial gauge and a magnetic bracket which is a nightmare and not as accurate as I'd like. Got the Emerald and DW produced his triumvirate which screwed directly into the relevant portions of the cam ladder allowing very quick and perfectly accurate cam timing. What took me about 2 hours in the garage to do with dubious results, I did in 2 minutes (I kid you not) at Emerald with no question over accuracy.

Needless, if I could afford 3 digital dial gauges I would buy them. I might next year. I've already got a set of digital verniers on my Christmas list... I'm digressing... what I meant to say is this, if the cam cover could one day incorporate all 3 locations for dial gauges then I may "upgrade". *thumbup*
