As a technical bumpkin would be grateful to learn what benefits/disadvantages the above would have on a standard 1700 xflow

Downsides - expense.

Upsides.. Improved economy, much improved part throttle response, better behaviour when off-cam, perfect idle, better starting, no timing wander, perfect dwell angle under all conditions, timing stays correctly set.

 

There is some further bumph here.

Having recently had this done to my crossflow, the biggest benefit to me is that it makes the engine almost as docile as a more modern engine at lower revs, whilst still being a banging. popping monster at high revs. Strongly recommended

Also has the benifits of of being totally programable for any engine tune, for a lot less money and agro than a conventional dizzy.

Have a look in the archive, there is plenty on this. I am one of the many converts having had this done several years ago on my Cross-flow

I've no doubt about the benefits, but are they worth £550 to £600.

 

I can buy a lot of fuel for that money and mapping doesn't effect the top end.
