paulyb
Had an excellent trackday at Rockingham yesterday and car ran like clockwork up to the last session. Engine cut out - unfortunately mid-corner so nice spin! Driving around the remaining lap back to pits it was running normally one moment then suddenly revs dropped and engine cut out. Also noticed the oil pressure was high - needle all the way off the guage 😳 😳 Engine always re-started immediately and normally. I'm guessing that this may be a problem with the pressure relief valve, but would be grateful if anyone can confirm / suggest otherwise. Also as a relative mechanical novice is this easy to deal with and could someone spell out instructions in words of one syllable! Car is 2001 SLR, standard dry-sumped VHPD. Thanks in advance. Peter Carmichael
If you have had severe over pressure, check the oil filter for signs of bulging and probably change it out of hand anyway. A stuck oil pressure relief valve may be due to debris in which case you need to find where it is coming from. Might be an idea to drop the sump and have a look for anything suspicious. Check it now rather than live on in hope.
Graham Perry
My crossflow does this. It usually means the wires just dropped off the sender unit on the engine, and that there is nothing really wrong.
paulyb
Graham, At work now so can't check it, but that wouldn't explain the stalling / poor running. Peter, Thanks for the advice. Did check the filter whilst at Rockingham and looks fine, but have taken on board your suggestion to change it. Now to get out of work to get it all done.
