Locking Nuts

A couple of simple questions from a Novice:

I have got a set of locking nuts for my live axle - will I need a torque wrench to fit them, or is how tight they are irrelevent?

Why do they only come in packs of 4? Any suggestions for the spare?

Can anyone recommend any books for getting up the curve on basic mechanics?

Looks like nice weather for blatting today, lets hope it's the same next weekend

😬 😬 😬 😬

the locking nuts should be tightened the same as any other wheel nut - 80Nm (50lbft) - ideally with a torque wrench. As for the spare, it would be easier for a thief to remove the long bolt that goes through the 'Y' spacer than to remove 2 wheel nuts, so a locking wheel nut there would be fairly useless (in truth they are pretty pointless anyway as a swift smack with a cold chisel and hammer will remove the locking sleeve).

You generally mount the spare in a slightly different way (i.e. the main strenth is through the centre of the wheel). This means that locking wheel nuts don't work properly on the spare.

Caterham do a locking system for the spare wheel, it costs about £25 and is very easy to fit.
