Al Duncan Posted September 27, 2002 Share Posted September 27, 2002 We are in a quandry as to whether to attempt this ourselves or not so would appreciate some input from anyone that has tried it. I went to the local body repairs centrer who advertise specialist approval on BMW Porsche and all them tin tops but they had never heard of the stuff . I thought 911s had a big patch of it on thier rear arch Here are the bits we want to put on :- Rear wheel arch -dogleg, Bonnet rear quarter pannel (where the doors hit), Door apperture side panel (where the harnesses hit) Nose cone upper and lower (where the stones hit) has anyone put these bits on themselves? If you do it yourself, you run the risk of binning the whole lot. With regard to the bonnet, Caterham now fit a small rubber grommet to the door where it rubs with the bonnet when open. Colin Grundy Posted September 28, 2002 Share Posted September 28, 2002 Al, there are plenty of threads on this subject. From my understanding Armourfend is extremely difficult to apply correctly. I'm sure there are people on the forum that have tried and succeeded but to my understanding it is a skilled job and something I would not consider. Good luck. Its very easy to fit and now days Caterham have developed the correct shape making it easier still. Only comment don't get a finger print on the sticky side as it will never go away! The guy doing the job used a fine water( well I think it was water) spray which allowed him to slide it about once he had positioned it. Seriously Armourfend looks the business, wish I had done it , as I put my new Superlight in the gravel trap (Coppice)at Donington and now have gravel rash on the side panels. wag Posted September 29, 2002 Share Posted September 29, 2002 I did it myself and it looks OK. They supply a squirter of liquid which I think is more than water. Spray this liberally on the sticky side and on the car and you are able to adjust the armourfend. It wont slip like wallpaper but its not bad. Make sure you get all the air out but dont worry about bubbles of the fluid, they go away. You need to spend a bot of time wiping down the compound curves to get them to stick. prs Posted September 30, 2002 Share Posted September 30, 2002 Great stuff, fully extended my swearing range during the fixing process much to the disgust of the other 1/2. I applied the rear wing, door openings and had plenty of bits left over, so i cut pieces to fit around the bonnet catches and also applied a strip across the leading edge of the nose cone and front cycle wings. Have covered about 3K since applying and not a single stone chip so well worth the pain in the 🙆🏻. Word of warning , ask for additional fixing fluid as you must keep the area flooded otherwise the film sticks instantly on contact and will stretch if you then try to remove it, practise first!! good luck and if all else fails then have a good swear!
