henry21p Posted June 21, 2011 Share Posted June 21, 2011 Sadly, my Grandma passed away a few weeks back and we have the unenviable task of clearing out her property, selecting a few personal things to keep and cherish and auction/sell/donate the remainder. I'm not putting up exhaustive detail yet, though I thought I would begin by saying that if there is anyone here for whom the following items are genuinely of interest, I can get detail and photos and talk offline. As a couple who lived all over the world, the collection of things is absolutely stunning and I'm hoping there might be a few things on the lists that might appeal to you ladies and gentlemen of good taste on here. If anyone's interested, we'd rather things were sold to people who love them and not pay the fees to an auctioneer. 1. Furniture We have a brand spanking new electric bendy single bed - bought about a month and a half ago, was late being delivered and unfortunately only got about a week's use. Bought for £1200, they are offering us £900 to take it back. *(If anyone's concerned, Grandma didn't pass away in her bed!) We also have a white/cream leather armchair - fully electric that goes from sitting to standing or lying down, complete with footrest. Once again, only got a few weeks use, so is as new, but the company that sold it want a fraction of its value back. There is a large matching set of beautiful Chinese Rosewood furniture - all carrying the same motifs and styles. This includes large dining room table and chairs, sideboard, sideboard and glass cabinet, tall display case, short glass topped display case, nested coffee tables, large coffee table. Jolly expensive and heavy but will be potentially getting auctioneers in to sell on our behalf. This fills the non-bedroom areas of a very large property! (for examples see here Assorted dark wood bookcases, sidetables, chests of drawers etc - no nasty veneered mfi stuff, all real wood. At least 2 very large (4ftx5ft) oval mirrors One large black lacquered and inlaid coffee table - japanese artwork inlaid in it - very old, well used but very nice for someone who collects such things. 4 Large oriental "vase" style lamps and lamp shades 2. Ornaments & trinkets Toledoware small items Lladro ornaments Capodimonte figurines and other bits Assorted sets of cut glass/crystal glasses, decanters Hundreds of elephant ornaments, from cheap book ends to expensive stone carvings and rare wood items Japanese bowls, pots and trinket cases and the odd vase. 2 large japanese byobu (colourful artwork) screens, one slightly damaged from the move from the US, the other is in cracking nick. One has a really heavy set of ornate "bird" style stands. 3. Perfect "student" or new household starter kit At least 4 complete sets of pots, pans, dishes, earthenware, kitchen knives, mixing bowls and jugs, coffee cups, tea mugs, butter dishes. Cheese toaster, toaster, kettles galore, plastic food tubs, thermos flasks, thermos coffee jugs, coasters etc 4. Books Modern Hardbacks - from Patricia Cornwell and Dick Francis through John Grisham and many others. Old Hardbacks - A large collection of rare coffee table hardbacks from all over the world. Enough cookbooks to teach a whole army of budding chefs. Modern and ancient. Complete Cordon Bleu second edition set of 71 books, Hugh Feanley whitthingy, French, Italian, Spanish, far eastern, indian and anything in between. For the ageing knitters - a huge selection of knitting patterns and books. For the fold out map geeky collector, there are maps from all over the world 5. Other bits A huge set of recordings on high quality reel to reel tapes of 1970's performances from the New York Met opera house, covering everything from La Traviata and La Boheme to Macbeth and Othello. All with original cuttings from the performance at the time and hand written notes on the cast and performers/conductor where appropriate. There is also a high quality 1970's reel to reel player as well A complete Revox B780 stereo separates system with dual tape deck, amplifier, beautiful wood speakers, amplifier and modern laser record deck. Classic Canon camera in leather briefcase, with lenses, tripod and filters as well as a canon protective case. This might go to a specialist if I can find one. As we get values on the things we are getting rid of, I'll update the above, but if the things listed are to anyone's tastes, please do let me know. henry21p Posted June 22, 2011 Author Share Posted June 22, 2011 She was getting quite peeved at being old and infirm, and she spent the few days before she passed away in the company of her daughter, grandkids and great grandkids all partying at her house, so wasn't a bad time to go. Not enjoying the whole experience since with dealing with the will and family. Doesn't feel quite "right" divvying up the things I grew up loving at her house, but none of us have space for everything and unfortunately the property needs to be sold (though she didn't own it, my mum and uncle bought it for her to live in). Bit like with a lot of caterham owners on here, I'd rather things went to someone who would love them than just to a faceless auction. Bob et al - the maps are not THAT old, but cover London, parts of the UK, Madrid, New York, Vienna, Tokyo and Buenos Aires amongst others. I would say they almost all date from 1960 onwards. I'm sure Blatchat can help if you get stuck on any will etc issues. Only tip from me would be to have more copies of the death certificate than you think necessary as not everyone returns them quickly (or at all). I think two choices are to take piccies or invite those interested to blat up to the mill for a looksee at the bits and bobs. So far, I've had interest (one only each - which is good) in: The Canon camera gear The byobi screens The dark wood furniture The Revox gear and reel to reel recordings The maps Cookery books Lladro/Capodimonte items The paintings will also be going, as will the majority of the antique silver (there's circa £35000 worth of silver there, including some cracking pieces which have matching items in the V&A's collection).
