Running a 1.6k SS with a non SS ECU

As per title, my mate has a 1.6K with the SS kit on it.

He finds it a pain in traffic (kangerooing), it's drinking petrol apparently and it smells like it's running really rich.

So he was wondering if he can just swap back to the old non SS ecu?

Would that help the drivability and reduce the fueling or would it end up running too lean with the SS cams?

Has he tried resetting everything?

If he has the SS ECU handy, then he might as well give it a try - it is, after all, only a couple of plugs and four screws...

The SS ECU is just a reflashed standard ECU, so no compatibility issues there (unless one is EU2 and the other EU3).

If it doesn't fix the problem, then take it to someone clever *wink*

I agree with Steve on this one. Take the car to a specialist and get them to have a look at it. I'd imagine the ECU can be tweeked if necessary (although I'm not familiar with std K-series ECUs). There are various sensors, one of which may not be working and hence sending duff info to the ECU...

Thanks chaps.

I know what you mean, sounds like a duff temp sensor or MAP sensor to me, or maybe an ECU with a duff input.

It's an EU3 engine, as far as I recall the MEMS isn't a flash programmable ECU so I think the option of re-mapping although possible is difficult.

Any advice who / where might be able to diagnose it near Derby?

Or is the info on the engine sensors available to test them yourselves?

Agree just swapping the ECU for the non-SS one won't fix it, it may run badly/worse as it's not matched with the SS cams so timing could be shot. Not that I've tried it though...

It may be mechanical or indeed a sensor issue as mentioned above - for the latter you need a Rover ECU expert who can plug their kit into the diagnostic plug and tell you what it thinks it's seeing, as well as whether the ECU itself is functioning correctly.

If you know someone else with a SS ECU you should be able just to swap them over (you'll probably need to swap the 5AS and plippers too) and see if it still does it. I bet it would be exactly the same as ECUs only fail very rarely - although it does happen. If you need an expert's advice I know one in the south midlands - my email address is in my profile.
