andy couchman
Having a problem getting into first gear. Sometimes works OK, other times it's very reluctant to go in. All other gears OK and changes are fine too. I tried adjusting the clutch (cable) to get more movement but that seems OK. Any thoughts? It's the Mark 2 Ford 4 speed unit (with bellhousing and remote control bits built in) as used in Escorts and things. Thanks. Andy
Klunk
Hi Andy , If you're not having problems with 2,3 or 4 I would think the problem is not with your clutch. Is the remote gear linkage okay? Does it pop out of gear? Assuming the linkage is okay, it's likely to be part of the synchro mechanism for first i.e. hub, blocker bars, hub spring or baulk ring. In which case it's a gearbox out job. These are easy boxes to rebuild and I've got a PDF of the manual if you fancy having a go. Sheds Moderator
I think Klunk has it about right. One final test - car stationary, engine running, does it drop into 2nd or 3rd no problem? If so then gearbox not clutch fault. Also, car stationary and in 2nd, engine running, is it any easier to get into 1st? If it is then suspect clutch drag.
