Why is my Diff hot?

Depend on how hot - warm, hot or blistered?

Is the oil up to the correct level?

It transmits power while turning the drive through 90 degress, in a less than 100% efficient way. Energy is lost in noise and heat.

Plus it's smack in the air flow down the tunnel from a hot engine and gearbox.

So it won't be cold.
