LHD car for long term use abroad

Looking for a sensible, reliable small family car, in good condition with known history. Sound mechanical condition more important than cosmetic appearance (although the two often go hand in hand).

 

Ideally a VW Golf or similar (e.g. Leon, Astra, Focus). Diesel or petrol. With MoT. UK registered and taxed. Age not as important as condition and mileage.

 

Nothing outrageous and performance will make insurance too expensive.

 

Budget up to £3k but hopeful for a LOT less. Our UK tin top (2001, excellent condition, FSH, MoT, etc, etc, valued at under £500!).
