How to over fill a live axle quickly

Tired of very slowly drip feeding oil into the axle via the breather, I decided I required a quicker system. The answer cost just 60p and works a treat. Go to you local vet and purchase a 100ml catheter syringe. It now takes just 5 seconds to add 100ml. "Seeempol"!

I would advise against using a microwave, oil is a much poorer microwave absorber than water, oil will still absorb microwave energy and heat, especially if the quantity of oil is large but it will take longer. Also, oils have a specific heat capacity of about 0.5, which is half that of water (1.0) and that means that for a given amount of microwave energy absorbed oil will get twice as hot as water. But be careful heating oil inside a microwave oven because oils can easily reach temperatures of over 400 F! This can cause serious burns .

I stand the oil in a pot of hot water for 10 minutes, as Bricol says it then "runs in like water"

Err, Guy, you appear to have two completely opposite things there about oil, microwaves and heating *wink*

One of the Lancia specialists I used to frequent recommended microwaves - the microwave really sounds to "load-up" if you know what I mean, when you shove a bottle of oil in it.

I was dubious about microwave energy effects at a molecular level on the oil - Millers Oils technical rep didn't have an answer for me when I asked a number of years ago - hence I stick with the old fashioned method.

Yes I probably worded it wrong, it will heat up but not as quick as say, water. It will take far more time and far far more power, but it will heat up. In fact it will, if left in under power long enough, get very hot.

That's why I would advise against using a microwave and also because it's quicker to stand the oil in a bucket of hot water *smile*.

OK - a quick question. Is the breather on an English axle different to that of the Ital?

How do I remove the breather to overfill on an English axle? It seems to be a fragile plastic mushroom which I am cautious of breaking off in a ham-fisted attempt to remove it.
