Flyingfish
I have changed my engine from an EU3 1.8k with standard ECU to an EU2 1.8k with an M3Dk Emerald. It is all running fine now except for one issue The rev counter is showing pretty much double the RPM that the Emerald is seeing. Can the POBC shed any light on what might be causing this and how I can fix it
jakeandlizzy
I am not sure, but one thing to try is to tweak the tacho signal multiplier in the ECU config menu under the 'distributor / crank sensor options' area. Think mine is set to 1.0 and I have an EU3.
caterhamnut
Yep - you need to see if there is a switch on the back of the rev counter (on a circuit board, behind a rubber bung) which you need to change - something about it getting twice the signals it was getting...if you are unlucky, you'll have a rev counter that can't be switched.... jakeandlizzy
Yes, if it cannot be changed (I don't know anything about your guage as mine is a stack dash), then you should be able to halve the output signal from the ECU itself through the menu system. This should do it!
caterhamnut
- that is useful to know! I may refit my 'new one' and see if that works
Flyingfish
Thanks for the advice. I will get all upside down under the dash later and try and find the switch on the tacho.
caterhamnut
I think you will have to take it out! Switch is a micro-switch deep in the inside - if you can see it upside down whilst the tach is still in the dash, then good luck!! 😬 Might be easier to try what Jake suggests first, assuming you have lead/laptop etc! caterhamnut
Ok - these are the pics I took when I asked exactly the same question 4 years ago! Back showing rubber bung: http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r254/caterhamnut/Seven/DSC00750.jpg 'Insides' - now I *think* it is something to do with that arrow-shaped dial, but not sure - I couldn't change mine... http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r254/caterhamnut/Seven/DSC00752.jpg Edited by - angus&tessa on 24 Feb 2011 11:56:
jakeandlizzy
The arrow shaped dial looks very much like a potentiometer! Probably for fine tuning! I would avoid it unless you can play with it while the engine is running and you have your laptop plugged in so you can see the ecu reading at the same time to get it right. That is, I doubt it would just 'click' once like a switch, but just spin around slowing changing the reaction to the input signal...clearly not a very sophisticated tacho! caterhamnut
How very dare you Sir 😬
Sigmamark
I would leave it alone. Just think of the benefits at track days........................"3/4 max revs please sir".......................... "crikey 52 Db is the lowest figure I have ever seen!!" "Next" 😬 😬
andy couchman
Plus you could put a big Dymo label on the dash: 'Warning. Keep revs below 16,400rpm'. That'll impress the 'what'll she do mister?' brigade 😬 Andy
David Mirylees
Same thing happened to my Zetec after I changed the ECU. The info given above is accurate - simple software change via the laptop menu and all was normal again.
jakeandlizzy
Quoting angus&tessa: How very dare you Sir 😬 Didn't mean to offend! I meant the tacho must be amazingly complicated ... look at those solder joints, NASA would be proud 😬
Big Dan
I have the same problem, what settings in the emerald menus do I need to change? I couldn't see anything obvious. Thanks
Area Representative Richard Price Posted March 20, 2011 Area Representative Share Posted March 20, 2011 Dan, Is your ECU a K3? If not, then you can't adjust the tacho scaling. If it's a K3, then, from the ECU config. menu, select "Crank/Cam/Distributor sensors". It's the top right option.
Big Dan
Hi Richard, Yes it is a K3, thank you, found it. Easy when you know where to look.
