Peugeot 205 Gti - now FOR SALE

Recommended Posts

Almost certainly going to get rid of the 205 as it's not getting much use now I have a Caterham again.

Thought I'd advertise it here first before venturing onto Pistonheads.

It's a 1988 1.6 Gti, sunroof, non-power assisted steering. Red, with pepper pot alloys.

It has much less rust on it than most and is in good nick for its age.

Update:

Right, it's going to be Sold.

Full advert below, on here for a week or two before going on Piston heads.

1988 Peugeot 205 Gti 1.6

£1,750

MOT until May, Tax until November

110k miles. Non- PAS, sun roof.

Now I have a Caterham this just isn’t being used enough so will have to go. I’ve owned it for over 18 months and its been a cracking car.

Car is in very good condition for its age with less rust than most and a very solid shell.

On purchase I had the current corrective work carried out by 205 specialist:

New top mounts and bearings

New front disks and pads

New clutch cable

New spark plugs

More recently it has had:

New radiator hoses

New motor for washer jet

Minimal history prior to my purchase but car appears to have been well looked after, a very tidy original car. Interior is smart with very little wear (for a car of this age).

Bad bits:

- Paintwork is showing it’s age in some areas (see photos)

- Some paintchips and scratches around the front of the car

- Slight hole in the manifold (but it’s been like this for over a year and shows no sign of getting any worse)

All in all a great car that will make someone very happy.

Photos can be seen here which show the good bits and the bad bits.

(taken on a rainy day – look even better after thorough clean and polish)

I bought a 205 GTi last year -what a little gem 😬.

Light, nippy, great engine and gearbox, delightfully reponsive chassis and sharp steering, still plenty quick enough for lots of fun, and practical enough as an everyday tintop.

I was advised to get a 1.6 or a 1.9 (they each have their merits), non-abs, non-power steering, in as good/original/rust free condition as possible. Some say it's better without the sunroof, but most have it, and it's actually very good and easy to use.

I made the mistake of buying one that was almost too nice (but nearer £3k), so I'm now a bit fussy about using it - hasn't been out this winter. But once spring arrives.....

Highly recommended - even Clarkson thinks so

Yep, it's been a cracking little car (hence the hesitation about selling).

There seem to be plenty of ropey sub £1k cars and quite a few £2.5k+ 'future classics' very hard to price those in the middle.

It is tempting to spend some money on a general smarten up but I just don't think I'll use it enough.

I had one as an everyday car for 50k miles and it was stunning! Really want another but will be looking in a couple of years when i have somewhere to store it!

The 1.6 is meant to be the better car so that's what i will be after next *thumbup*.

Not too bothered about future classic status at this low price level-just use them!

Keep it Lurk, I know the Caterham will be coming to Le Mans this year but you did want to take the GTi, so keep it & take that one year?

Or you take the 7 & I will take the 205 on a trip to Nurburgring 😬

Always Looking forward to Le Mans!

I have had two, my firts one was my firts car, reaaly nice one bought from a good friend of my dad, I crashed it aged 19 *wink*

the second one I bought at university after leaving a note on the windscreen as it looked in time wrapped condition.it was a one lady owner car 1985, absolutely perfect.

I sold 4 or 5 years ago for the very reason you are selling : not using it enough because of the 7 but i now regret that decision so much, I got £1500 for it ... at the time I could do with the money ...

if it's a good one and you don't need the cash, keep it, seriously ...

Thanks for the suggestions!

After more thinking I've decided I will put it up for sale.

Cars are made to be driven and I don't want it to deteriorate from lack of use and I want this to go to a good home.

I'll dig out more info/photos on the weekend and post them here.

hmmm very little interest in this.

Will now take £1,600 ono.

If not I'll enjoy it for a few more months and then re-advertise later in the year.

(at which point it will have longer to run on the MOT which may encourage buyers?)

Lurk, when I sold my last one (OK it was in France so not directly comparable market wise) I had no viewings for 6 months, I was puzzled because I knew how good the car was relative to what is out there.

Then, one phone call, viewing, no haggling money changed hands and more than 5 years down the line I still get news of the car: chap is still in love and nothing went wrong with it ....

moral of the story: if you are not desperate to sell, don't move the price and be patient

Thanks for the comments, I will MOT it - but will wait until it's due for a new one rather than get it done early.

Once it's got a full MOT and it's summer it then seems a shame not to use it for a bit longer *cool*

(hmmm - do I really want to sell it?)

Unless anyone takes it off my hands beforehand I'll get it MOT'ed, enjoy it a bit longer and then advertise again July.........

I'm sure its a lovely car and one of many itches I'd like to scratch but its not a show car and probably never will be. With little history, exhaust issue and such a short ticket its a sub-£1000 car in my book. If you enjoy it and can afford to keep it I would.

All IMHO of course.
