Stef
Had my car flat floored and the ride height raised at track cars services in warrington yesterday. On the rear they had to take the dampers off to move a fixed collar up a notch on the damper to move the thread up higher, hope that makes sense! When I got the car back I noticed that they haven't put the lower locking ring back on. When I asked them about it they said that was fine, there was no way it would move and they run all their race cars like that. Anyone got experience of that? Is it ok? Thanks Steff
James_Russell
I know others do this, but I can't say for sure if theres a chance of it turning. I suspect not, but maybe you can mark the position of the ring relative to the threaded sleeve with some tippex so you can see if it moves? Q41 ACF Classic #98 My Race Videos Here! Stef
Thanks for that, I will put some tipex on, good idea! The main thing was just to find out if others do do it, so at least it sounds like i'm not alone.
myothercarsa2cv
Hope you got the other collar back... I'd put it on, personally... John _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic
James_Russell
John, lets hope its OK, because to put the other ring back on will basically involve doing the whole job all over again! Q41 ACF Classic #98 My Race Videos Here!
myothercarsa2cv
I'm sure it will be - plenty of aftermarket coilovers only have the one ring. I would rather have the peace of mind though John Edited for speeling _________________________ myothercarsa2cv Bugsy: '82 2cv6 😬 Talloulah '08 1.6K Classic Edited by - myothercarsa2cv on 20 Jan 2011 10:44:
Fishy Dave
Mine has only one ring on both front and rear shocks (standard Bilsteins) and they definately don't move, despite some robust use. heavenly7
I would have thought they should at least have asked before removing it.
Archie Procter
put it back on, I've had them drop without the locking ring and now always refit it, even if space is tight and it involves cutting it down a bit
Stef
thanks all, I think I'll mark it with tipex and just keep a close eye on it. I should say that when questioned about it track cars services were very good about it and said that they do it on all their racers but if I was worried about it they would re-check it at any time and replace them if they do move. Oh and yes I did get the collars back . Cheers Steff
elie boone
It depends on the tread that is used on the body/collar but most importantly that the spring is always under compression, especially when u lift a wheel.
James_Russell
I agree- if the spring is in compression and the surfaces of the platforms haven't been lubricated, I can't imagine the platform twisting. Unfortunately we can't be definative as we have a few people on the thread who have first-hand experience of running the platforms without the locking ring and their expereinces are mixed! mav
If it was there before and it's not now, then you should rightly ask them to either refit it (it's a lock ring and its there for a reason), or give it back to you. to be fair, most racers don't seem to use the two rings, but on a non race car are you likely to be removing the wheels before each use to check weverything is as it should be? Area Representative Paul Richards Posted January 21, 2011 Area Representative Share Posted January 21, 2011 The locking ring is there for a reason. If Bilsteins design them and put them on then I'd keep them on. I can understand the reason for leaving them off a race car when suspension may be constantly adjusted, but but yours is not a race car. On a road car, there's no reason not to put them on as it makes sure that they don't move. The last thing you want is to have to constantly check marks to see if there has been movement. It should be "fit and forget". Paul Richards Area Representative - L.A.D.S.
