1600 X/Flow Sprint - sump plug crushable washer

Dirty Den

Recommended Posts

I went to Camberley Auto Factors and they didn't have anything suitable at all. Tried the parts desk at Halfords and the chap said they should be copper washers, gave me a few that are a little oversized for the sump plug, but the thread fits the washer neatly.

Didn't think to check my Burton catalogue earlier - I'll check that later,

Den,

I think it was either Redline, along with all the other bits *tongue*, or from CAF/Halfrauds.

CAF is the favourite as I seem to remember buying other "consumables" such as oil, points, plugs and an oil filter at the same time.

The copper washer should be fine. Just make sure the mating surfaces of the plug are clean and smooth.

Steve -

Cheers for the info. Perhaps next time you go washer shopping, I could get you to get me a few?? In the meantime I'll use what I've got and keep an extra close eye out for any oil drips around the sump plug.

Strange that you say CAF was the favourite - they didn't seem to have a clue when I went in there. Halfords were much more helpful... *eek*

Den,

The conversation went something like this...

Me, Hello, I'd like some bits for my car

Them, Certainly, what model and year?

Me, Its a 79 Caterham.

Them, Blank confused look followed by "thats not listed sir"............ *confused* *confused* *confused* *confused*

Eventualy I managed to get the parts book from them and found a suitable "normal" car to get the part Nos from (1980 Escort 1600GT)

Look as going into CAF as an adventure and you wont go too far wrong 😬

If you original washer was a copper one, try gently smoothing both sides with a little wet and dry.

As long as the surface is fairly smooth you should be OK.

I just told them it was from an Escort. That earned me a 'over on that stand mate' from bloke A. The stand was empty, so I went back and had a word with bloke B, who had a look in his washers jar, but no joy.

I don't think my washer is really a washer (well certainly not a copper one) - it's a plastic/nylon washer I think. Probably put in as a stop gap and I haven't thought about changing the washer when I have changed the oil, until now.

I'll pop the copper washer on that I got at Halfords and see how I get on. *confused*

Oh, and you got the parts book from them? How the bloomin' hell did you manage that? *thumbup*

Thanks for the info Brent.

I think I was fortunate enough to find someone in Halfords who knew what they were talking about *eek* - I've got a couple of washers, but if anyone has a part number/catalogue number etc, that would be great - will make getting them easier in the future.

Hi Den,

How is the axle these days? Back from Hols now, got back when the rain started!

Is it still all quiet on the rear front (so to speak) *biggrin*

Thinking on the boring drive in that my axle is the wrong ratio for your 4 speed box anyway! So look after it and get it shimmed - unless you fancy a 3.9 diff with your 4 speeder! 😬

Zetec is in and running *wink*

Brent - would that be the correct ratio for my 4 speed box then? Has yours been shimmed already? Phil tells me that mine could do with it.

Phil - yep, all quiet on the rear front *tongue* - seems fine and I chucked a little bit more EP90 in just before I took the car to Llandow a few weeks back, to be safe.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday, thanks for bringing the rain over... *wink*

Dave - thanks for the part number... *smile* *thumbup*

Brent - cheers for the offer, but I will most probably just get mine shimmed. I suspect I'd only end up having to get yours shimmed eventually, as mine will see the odd trackday *wink* *thumbup*
