Prop question

Have a look at this picture - I took it 'blind' a few weeks ago, to see if I could see where my leak was coming from. I've already replaced the speedo seal, but pretty sure the oil is leaking from the oil seal at the end of the gearbox - in this pic, I *think* I can see the seal slightly misshapen at the 'bottom', which may be where the oil is leaking, but it COULD be an optical distortion caused by the leaking oil - IYSWIM.

But the other thing that caught my eye was the UJ in the pic, where you can see part of the bearing inside the casting, which seems to have been ground away.

Are they all like this? I don't think it has been ground 'in use' (I'm in trouble if it is!) but hadn't noticed it before...

Difficult to tell about the seal, as you say, could be a magnifying effect caused by a build up of oil - but it's not a terribly expensive part and replacing it is a no brainer.

The missing bit on the yoke seems odd - can't see how this would occur in use, can't see it's been ground for clearance on the grease nipple. IMO it shouldn't be like that and, though not a cheap job, needing the attention of a propshaft specialist (yoke replacement, UJ replacement , front and rear I guess, whilst you're at it , and a balance.

A good £100 I expect.

That doesn't look right to me either. Its such a big lump out of it, it strikes me that had it been there when you did your big rebuild you would have noticed it, because I recall you saying on here that you pretty much checked every component thoroughly while the chassis was away being sorted ?

It would be a good opportunity to fix it while doing the gearbox seal.

Right - that's good enough for me. Not a part one wants to take a risk on.

Yep - Mark and I replaced all the bearings in the UJ a few years ago, and as you say, we would have noticed that lump missing!

I need to take it all out to replace the oil seal anyway, so will have a closer look and take pics etc, clean it off and see if it has indeed 'dropped off' or somehow worn away...

Not going to take any risks with that part though - the current prop is probably original, so maybe time to replace - already had one offered via email! *smile*

Thanks for the opinions chaps. *thumbup*

Incidently, here is what Mark and I replaced back in 2006

Yep - broken yoke. Any propshaft repair place would be able to repair - remove old yoke and replace.

I mullered the one in the Dutton trials car - bent and twisted axle tube on the side of the locating links of the rear suspension forced the diff nse a lot higher than it should be - on full bump it bascially levered the prop yoke apart - cue high revs prop flailling around in the tunnel I reinforced with steel when I bought it, rather than the standard Dutton GRP one! Bearing cups and needles on the floor as the cast iron bits disentigrated.

£30 from Propshaft Clinic in Bradford - which is now in Leeds with a differnet name that now escapes me - but google them and phone number still gets them . . . old yoke cut off, new yoke welded in, balanced, new spider and bearing and reattached to diff joke - sorry it'll take until Friday . . . (took it in on a Wednesday).

Job done. They do mail order and have a good name amongst the kit car, Land Rover lot.

As for seal - once prop out, lever seal out with screwdriver (don't scratch the housing, drive in new one with carefull hammer taps, working around it a little at a time.
