LawrenceR
POBC As above really: I have added as many spacer as I dare under the drivers side rubber mount. I have filed down the cradle (time consuming) but don't want to remove too much material. And now I am thinking of adding spacer between the cradle and engine support. So to my questions: Any reason I should not do this? How many bolts hold the cradle on, if I remove the two for the engine support will it fall off? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Thumbs Edited by - Thumbs on 26 Sep 2010 22:42:
mic
Have you tried twisting the rack down in its clamps?
LawrenceR
Thanks for the idea mic I have had a look, but unfortunately, the column won't go any lower given the position of the holes through the bulk head and pedal box ☹️ Thumbs
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted September 26, 2010 Area Representative Share Posted September 26, 2010 Which k series variant is this engine? Hopefully Richard Price will be along later on to shed a bit of light on this one as he had to file off quite a bit of material when the mount fouled the steering rack quite a bit ----- Back in a BEC! - but done alright in Class 1... Peter Carmichael
Is this a new instalment of the dry sump cradle or a new trick played by an existing car? Usually this happens when the engine mount on the other side fails.
LawrenceR
It is a second hand dry sump kit that was fitted to my '97 car last week. The passenger side rubber mount was shot but I replaced it with little improvment. To over come the problem I have added a washer between the cradle and engine support; this, together with my filing and spacer under the drivers side mount, has given me about 1 mm clearance Thumbs

oilyhands
The cradle is significantly over-engineered, some more judicious metal removal will do the trick, I have seen this problem a number of times. Oily
Area Representative Richard Price Posted September 26, 2010 Area Representative Share Posted September 26, 2010 As Oily says "The cradle is significantly over-engineered" ! I've recently fitted a DS system onto a 140 Xpower, which requires the VVC/Xpower RHS engine mount so that the plenum clears the bonnet. This different engine mount lowers the RHS of the engine so the DS cradle makes even harder contact with the steering column. I ground away a lot of material so that the cradle clears the column. I wish I'd have thought about it more BEFORE fitting it all in place. Additionally, I wish I'd have photographed it for future reference 😳

PAC
If you are really stuck, I moved the rack in mine over about 10mm, works fine! Although the only track I can drive is now the Indy oval P
