Gearbox cover plate gasket (5 speed)

There seems to be oil around the gearbox (5 speed) cover plate so I'm thinking of replacing the gasket/seal as I have a spare one.

 

How awkward is it to get the bolts out (and just as important back in)?

 

The gasket I have appears to be cardboard..ish, would I put that in dry, smear it with oil or what?

Tricky, when you have hands like mine (bunch of bananas), but I managed it with a few scratches. You'll find it easier with a 1/4 inch drive socket set - I have one if you need to borrow.

I used my old gasket with a smear of hylomar and it cured the leak.

edited to say - make sure you put the cover back on the right way round.

Thanks for the info Paul, I might take you up on the loan offer. I may do the dip stick mod while it's off if I can find someone to braze a nut on.

I can braze a nut on, provided I get some more brazing rods and I can dig my bottles out from under my daughters furniture.
