superlight R - engine breathing.

i have recently noticed an increase in the 'breathing' of my 1.8k series (200bhp). i have a dry sump and catch tank. gases are now more visible from the hose from the engine into the catch tank. the flow increases with engine speed.

in addition, when i release the oil filler cap on the cam cover, the engine draws in air as if a vacuum has been created. this happens either when the engine is running or after shutdown.

are these 2 things related? should i be concerned?!

don't know if it's a problem, but i take it your hoses are transparent?

mine are black so don't know about bubbles

is your catch tank sealed?

The scavenge pump creates a vacuum (well, less than 1 bar anyway) inside the engine, so it's entirely expected that releasing the cam cover oil filler will result in air being audibly drawn in.

You will see gases coming from the catch tank hose. This is all normal behaviour.

jerry, hoses are black. the catch tank is not sealed. the gases are visible through the catch tank breather.
