A question for the site manager

So you have to go rooting for the camera, grab a flash card out of the wii console, turn the house upside down looking for the camera charger then p1ss about doing a David Bailey with the said TOYO........FFS IT'S A TYRE

But people want to know what colour and shape they are *thumbup*, and in this case a picture tells a thousand words 😬.

Simple.

The alternative is that we all pay a slice to ebay.
and quite a hefty slice too, with final value fee at 10% and paypal another 4%.

However unless I am very sure of the price I list all my stuff on ebay, I got sick of all this "dibs" crap and people commenting about prices on threads on here (either too low or too high). The person that buys is the first person I agree a deal with, regardless of any debate on here.

Perhaps the answer is to have a "classifieds" section where comments are not permitted and the only way to actually buy something is to contact the member directly. Gets rid of all the things people are complaining about... but it does mean clarifications about spec and what car items fit are no longer public...

Think of it this way . . . you buy Auto Trader on Friday at 9pm on the way home up the motorway . . spot the car of your dreams and ring the seller immediately . . . to discover it sold on Thursday at 5.30am when it hit the newsagent . . . (as my mates Escort RS Turbo did in the '90's - he then spent the next two weeks telling hundreds of callers . . . 😬 ).

You'd simply accept it rather than ring the publishers . . .

But Ebay links annoy me too.

What offers are accepted by the seller are entirely up to him.

eBay links cheese me off too since they are not for sale but for auction and therefore infringe Barry's "price" rule.

Perhaps we should have a different identifier for these, or a seperate page as other fora do.

Whilst we're arguing about dibs, one thing that often frustrtaes me is when I see someone put something up for sale when there is a wanted post for the very same item.

Once again one can't legislate against someone selling to the first/highest bidder but it would be nice if they first looked and contacted the person who posted the wanted to see if they are interested in the purchase.

I've been caught out by a difference of interprestation on what been posted on 'For Sale' threads and think making all dealings on line until the point of discussing payment method should be through the thread.
Mav, you are assuming that these items are exclusively advertised on BC, which many of them are not. Also, we haven't all got jobs that allow us to sit at a desk typing all day. If I've got something to sell I'd much rather an interested buyer phoned me to discuss the situation, particularly if some inconvenience may be required (delivery/collection of awkward objects etc) because I can get a much better idea of who I'm dealing with (and therefore whether I wish to put myself out) and can sort everything out far quicker than BC postings.

same discussion different day

Need some stats of how often the same gripes get an airing - just put some rules in

1. All items for sale must be available

2. First person to offer the asking price gets the item

3. No Low Ball offers

4. No offering more to secure an item - this is not an auction site

5. NO thread spoiling

6.IF you are not involved directly with the sale / purchase DO NOT post MYOB

7.FOR SALE section should be for club members only

8. NO dibs either! buy the item or make an offer

9. NO buying on behalf of anyone else YOU are the buyer or tell your mate to join the club

10. sellers include a picture and full description of item and a price DO NOT open the thread to offers.

And maybe a few more........

BUT I know it will be said we dont want rules we aren't children - LOL but this will come up again always does.........Nowt will change the SQ

Why should the first person to ask get it? Seems most unfair on people who only have occasional internet access (which, in case it's not obvious, isn't me).

Surely a fairer system would be to register all interested parties over a set period, then randomly pick a person from that list - or else go for some other criteria such as geographical closeness.

OK, not really workable, but it seems to be generally assumed that "first person gets it" is fair, when it isn't particularly.

first person to offer the asking price - gets it ......Not who asks...........obvious really or IF the seller wants to sell to the first near offer then thats up to the seller.......

So If I offered for sale a set of wheels for £400 and I get 2 or 3 offers BUT not the asking and I have not agreed a sale with anyone - then an offer of the asking comes the day after I put them up for sale - I can say yes to the offer of the asking price.... and under no obligation to any other posters offers. The people who offered less lose NO dibs rubbish make an offer or pay the asking - if seller accepts an offer then thats it, the deal is done.......even if someone comes along and offers the asking - thats tough on the seller. Its a gentleman's agreement making an offer and it being accepted - some would not adhere to it though - then they would be banned from selling on the club site.......for a period.

Your idea would never work......... *wink*

I suppose its up to the seller but I recon most sellers will sell to the first person who offers either the asking price or an offer thay are happy to accept. If you had a rule lie your suggestion I would gues very few would sell on BC

The For Sale board has worked for me and the buyers but I agree the "dibs" thing and the doubling up of blatmail and posted replies is confusing and can be unfair.

I am a member of a popular cycling forum, this behaviour was noted and now all new For Sale post are locked. You can edit your ad and delete your ad but replies are not visible - people can only respond by private message. "BTT" can be done by deleting your ad and rewriting it. It works a treat no more idle banter and slagging matches and stuff gets sold rather than criticised or 'reserved' by people.

Just an idea.

I could do this if it's widely felt that it could help.

Personally I think the current system works ok, but for the evident gazumping by blatmails (the timings of which only the seller will ever know in relation to "yes please" replies on the thread).

The only enhancement I would suggest would be having two discrete For Sale sections: one called 'Bits'n'bobs' for components, etc, and the other called 'Cars' exclusively for vehicles to save them getting lost so easily/quickly in the sea of smaller ads.

The for sale section works for me as it is.

I have been "let down" but I can live with that.

What I don't get is why this discussion is in the "for sale" forum.

In general all I miss on BC is some proper discussions. It's a bit too PC IMO.

No thanks - I'd much prefer to keep the offering etc within the thread, and only take it to blatmail to exchange payment/delivery details. Much more open IMO, and seems to work well for other forums

I don't see the locking of the thread working or should I say being an "upgrade" *wink* to the existing system.

There are quite a few things I would make an offer for but then find I'm to late as its already on 4th dibs and I don't want to pee off Kenny 😬 any further.

If it were a locked thread with only Blatmail the seller could be inundated for days with pointless emails as people would not know the current situation. I know they should update the thread as sold but lets live in the real world.

It would eventually stop people looking as they just would not know the situation. If we try to enforce the current rules more rigorously and ask the seller to provide better updates I don't see a better system really.

How many of the people moaning on this thread think there are too many laws in this country?

As Barry has said this is all behavioural and up to the individuals concerned. If you miss a bargain in the high street I'm sure you accept you missed it and move on. Do the same thing here.

We already have too many rules here so let's not add more for the sake of making rules.

I'll post my opinion for what it is worth *rolleyes*

as a seller, first person to tell me, "I'll have it for x price, will pop a cheque in the post, please send item at XYZ" gets the item, it's simple isn't it *confused*

Agree with previous posters about leaving things as they are but lets nail this 1st dibs thing. 1st dibs must equate to meaning "I will buy this item at your stated price"

If you turn up to look at a car at the same time as another bloke and he says to the seller "Hmmm, I'm interested in this, can I have first dibs please whilst I go home and chat to the Mrs"..........."oh and go and root your camera out and send me some pics for her to see"

If you're standing there with a fistfull of notes and say you'll buy it and take it away now I can't see the guy saying "sorry, but you can have 2nd dibs".....if he did he'd have to do a BTTT................which isanother trait that pisses me off when done more than 11 times a day on the same overpriced item *smile*

Also when you put your phone number on the ad why to people still insist on email to ask questions?.............I hate answering long winded crappy questions in type, it is far better the old luddite way. *thumbup*
