Area Representative Tin Man Posted July 15, 2010 Area Representative Share Posted July 15, 2010 My CRB needs replacing again. ☹️ I have now done over 30,000 miles, so I will replace the clutch at the same time. With this in mind, I will need to decide which clutch to use. My engine output is around 195BHP, therefore would it be a good idea to replace it with the Caterham uprated version, or will the standard clutch be ok? I look forward to the replies. Graham King
John, assuming you mean replace the whole assembly, then the difference in price is pretty small so I would go for the uprated version. I have it fitted and personally I prefer the slightly firmer feel that it gives. Graham. R7 GPK Superlight #
Support Team Shaun_E Posted July 16, 2010 Support Team Share Posted July 16, 2010 Most of the class 5 sprinters (200+ bhp), including me, use the AP clutch. It works well and seems to last even with 250bhp engines. Please double check these, but I think the part numbers are: 72603R (cover) and 72602R (plate). Area Representative Tin Man Posted July 17, 2010 Author Area Representative Share Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks for the replies. Graham, is this uprated clutch heavier to use as my wife also drives the 7. Regards John
Mick Day
Having used both clutches on my car the AP clutch is not much heavier than the original Quinton Hazell offering.

John Vine
John, If your premature CRB failure was caused by inadequate pre-load (most are, IMO), you might like to consider increasing the pre-load with an extra spring or two acting on the clutch pedal. Do a search on "CRB and pre-load" -- you'll find bucketfuls of info available. If you'd like a copy of the LF article I wrote on this very subject, send me a blatmail. mav
Caterham only have the 'uprated' clutch these days - one size fits all (k Series).

anthony1956
also consider the Clutch Release Arm £80 if you have a bell housing dry sump (I cannot speak for other types), grievous experiences here when mine failed. Anthony
