Bananaman
Is it possible to convert an 8Valve 1600VX engine to 16Valve. If so is it just a case of swaping heads or will the bottom end need attention? Has anybody done this swap or am i going down a blind alley? Any help much appreciated 😬 Andy
16vastra
well, theres the pistons to change, as cutouts will be needed, then i imagine theres extra sensors on the block (2.0 litre person myself, not seen a 1.6 but its probably got cam, crank and maybe knock sensors) and a load of other crap too... best off getting a nice outta the box 1.6 16v since they stuck them in most small vauxhalls. probably looking at around 400-600 squid depending on condition and what not, a conversion would probably cost the same anyway. Mike Bees
The 16v 1.6 Vx (Ecotec) engine is a totally different beast to the 8v lump, much smaller, much much lighter & more tuneable. Mike
Bananaman
Would the Exhaust & manifold from a 8V motor fit the 16V ? or would you need a new Exhaust etc?
Peter Carmichael
Definitely need a new exhaust.

Nick M
Think you might be right !! Like I said elsewhere, there's loads of things that need to be changed when considering an engine swap. Best bet is to get a whole new 1.6 16v engine and pop it in the car. SBD have done that for at least two Caterhams that I know of, maybe more. TIM 5O
Dont give up so quickly , I have had the same thought on 16v VX . So all thats needed is one engine and one complete exhaust system.GOOD However as it is lighter or more important smaller would the 1.6 16v fit without major chassis changes. Nick M
Yes it would, it fits a treat. SBD even have engine mounts and exhaust manifold available off the shelf.
