Recently purchased a Zetec 1.8l silvertop with a view to upgrading my X/Flow, however didn't realize that it would boot me into class 4. With hindsite not my best purchase this year so looking to recupe my costs to plow into rebuilding the X/Flow engine, and thought i'd offer it here first.

The engine is a Phase 1 Silvertop which started life as a 1.8l in a ford escort generating 115PS @ 5,500.

It was used as a final year project in a motor sport degree in coventry where it was modified to produce the maximum power within a defined budget. and was dyno tested.

Developments include

ported cylinder head, 38% increase in air flow (test results to prove)

balanced pistons and rods supplied by scholar race engines.

high lift camshafts (9.3mm inlet, 8.7mm exhaust)

new piston rings

full new gasket set

new head bolts

engine has been used on a dyno with no oil leaks etc.

dyno print out showing 166BHP at 5500rpm

RPM……..Torque Nm……..Torque lb/ft…...……..Power (BHP)

2500…….......…..146.5…...……..….…..108………...……...…..70

3000…….......…..150.5…...……..….…..111………...……...…..86.2

Comes complete with the power run data & final year paper.

So what is included in the sale.

Complete assembled engine bottom end, escort sump & Ported Head.

So What is not included in the sale.

Not - Inlet Manifold, Throttle Bodies, ECU etc

Not - Flywheel & Clutch

Not - Exhaust Manifold etc.

Looking at around the £650 mark.

My view. You're looking at a narrow target audience and nobody who looks at the "For Sale" is currently looking for what you have.

As to price etc. Ebay is a great way of finding out what the real market value is ... Of course, you're then torn between a long auction (leading to people buying something else if they're desperate, but allowing people the chance to see it) and a short auction (vice versa).

Good luck!

Cheer's Jez, much as i'd thought.

In no rush i'll leave on here for a few day's before listing on ebay.

Just wish i'd realised that it would push me into class 4 before i'd clicked on the buy button, but hay ho that's life. Thought it would have been a way to give me a reliable class 2 at just under 160BHP when on Webbers but got tripped up by the current regs which only allow Lotus Twin cams in Class 2. could upgrade the cam to get to 190BHP for Class 4 but would then need to replace the rear axle as well and it just dose not make sense or cost effectivness to push it that far.

Hi Chris *wavey*,

If I were you, I would keep the engine unless you already have an alternative. There are many ways to lose bhp. For instance:

Softer cams (more torque low down/less bhp high up the rev range)

Standard head (poorer flow at higher revs)

Swing the cam timing

Restrict the air flow to the throttle bodies (sock filters are very good at this *tongue*)

Rev limiter

Retard ignition.

If the bottom end is balanced then that's one of the bits worth keeping.

I don't know the regs but there is more than one way to skin a cat for a lot less money than you would think.

Regards,

Giles

It's not a case of loosing 6 BHP, it's more a case of having to gain 24 BHP and then upgrade the rear live axle to a point where it can actually take 190 BHP.

Class 4 has a power limit of 190 BHP and the majority have around that level.

Class 2 has a power limit of 160 BHP and does not allow twin cam's with the exception of the Lotus twin cam. I think in the immeadiate term sorting the X/Flow out would be the best option rather than trying to do a Zetec upgrade, Zetec installation and new rear axle. as all that would be a tidy sum, so rather than hanging onto a lump I might never use better to pass it on and invest the tide up funds into sorting the existing X/Flow upto the 160 mark.

Ouch, £1700 for a new axle, plus the mods for the engine looking at £4k plus to do the upgrade.

I'm afraid that's not cost effective at the moment. well we will see if anyone is interested in buying a Zetec, and maybe they will want the axle to match ?
