Fitting caterham race seat

combine

Recommended Posts

The standard fitment of the race seats does use adjustable-rails between seat and floor. Can't confirm if they are the same rails or not.

Whatever you do, make sure you use a couple of 'penny' washers each side of the floor (underside at least) to spread the load to the floor. You might well find that you'll need to stack up some washers at the front of the seat to make the angle comfortable - don't over-do it and do make sure that there's enough thread left on the bolts for the under-floor nuts. If you do need longer bolts at the front, make sure that they are of the correct-spec steel (CC-parts can help - they supplied me with *much* longer bolts for this purpose in the past).

That makes sense now , wasn't sure where the washers went ! So they take the place of the original bars attached to the leather seat. Still seems daft fitting to thin ali floor and not using bars to spread weight to previous bolt holes .

If you are not trying to lower the new seat and wish to avoid fitting to the floor, adapt the mounts of the original seats for the tillets seats. Blat mail me and I'll return some photos, as Ive just been through this task.

NO! You must use a mount/runner under the seat. If you bolt the seat directly to the floor with any kind of variation in spacers front to rear, which is usually needed to get a suitable angle, the mounting bolts will put strain on the captive nuts inside the seat base (actually "BigHead" fasteners) and they will become detached.

The adjustable runners used on the standard seats can be re-used on Tilletts, or you can get a fixed mount from Caterham that is a couple of modified sections of 25mm square ally tube. The runners bolt directly to the seat, then use spacers under the runners to achieve the desired reclining angle - sat flat, Tilletts are more upright than standard seats.
