Taran Las
I've replaced the "A" frame bushes on my car this afternoon. The pack from Caterham contained two single part bushes and two tapered bushes. The rear bush in the De Dion tube bracket was a single bush(approx 1" long). I'm replacing the bracket bush with the two Y16 (I think) offerings. To remove the rear bush I pressed out the centre including the rubber which left the outer metal part in the De Dion bracket. I eventually removed this but am now left pondering if the Y16 bushes simply fit into the bracket or should I have left the metal outer part of the previous bush in place. Any ideas guys 🤔 Thanks Philip. D. Owen Membership No. 3976
scooby dooby doo
tapered 🤔 when i ordered a full set of bushes i just got non-tapered (unless i misunderstand the term) bushes in two sizes. both types were about an inch long and made of a pair of concetric cylinders with rubber inbetween. I got a friend of a friend with a press to swap them all over. so - i think the metal bit comes out - but the term "tapered" has scares/worried/confused me. or am I speaking cobblers again 🤔 ❗ HOOPY CYCLE WINGS CUCUMBER
Paul McKenzie
Phil, When I did the same job the two front A-frame bushes were not tapered, and it was just a press out/press in job. I''ve just looked at the receipt and the bushes were part B636/2 bush-w/bone-A-frame-R/arm. Are you going to Oulton today, there''s some mega F1 stuff there, and all totally unsilenced - I''m pretty sure they''re not under 105 dbs. See you there, Paul
Taran Las
Paul, Yes I''ll be there - see you later. I''ll bring the invoice and old parts for your opinion. Hoopy Parts supplied were B636/2 Bush-w/Bone-a/Frame-r/arm. Y16 Suspension bush-taper. I''ll let you know when I get a definitive answer. Philip. D. scooby dooby doo
is it possible you got a live axle A frame bush set? i think they''re replaceable at the side of the road and and don''t have an outer metal section on the bush. A tapered bush would also be easier to get in / out.... HOOPY CYCLE WINGS CUCUMBER
scooby dooby doo
just looked at the parts CD. the dedion rear suspension has: B636/2 5 £5.35 Bush Large (all models) E2030 2 £5.83 Bush Small (Radius Arm) (all models) the live axle has: Y16 2 £0.74 Taper Bush (74 onwards) B636/2 4 £5.35 Bush - Large (74 onwards) E2030 2 £5.83 Bush - Small (74 onwards) so it looks like the parts department sent you the wrong bits i think the 5 are for: two in the Aframe 1 in the dedion tube middle 2 for the dedion tube end of the radius arms the little two are for the other end of the radius arms. don''t know with the live axle - I''ve never really had much of a poke around one. I know somebody who''s doing a load of work on their live axle Lotus S3, I''ll ask what the Y16 tapered things are for. Taran Las
Hoopy, Just had a look at the CD myself. It looks as though you''re right. I''ll contact them tomorrow and get replacements - Track day at Angelsey on Friday, need the car to go in a straight line now and again Cheers (Off to Oulton Park now ) Philip. D. scooby dooby doo
I mailed a live axle owning friend and got the following VERY comprehensive answer..... the 636 (without the "B" or "/2") are used for mounting the radius arms to the axle and the A-frame to the car this is identical to for the Live axle and the De Dion. there are more 636 bushes but they are for attaching the diff to the frame. the 2030 (with an "S" instead of "E" prefix) is used for the radius arms to the car again both Live and De Dion the Y16 are indeed the "famous" 3000 (if that) mile bushes again both Live and De Dion. all this according to Tony Weale and I know it's correct for the live axle. the Y16 are a bit "mushroom" shaped with a hole in them the top of the "mushroom" and the hole is lined with a metal insert. I'll try some ASCII art here: _____ W _____ /_ / _/ / / / / / / hole / / t / / / / H /__/ /__/ D Where W = 30 mm 1 3/8" hole = 12.7mm 1/2" D = 24 mm 15/16" t = 9.92 mm 3/8" (measure halfway as this dim tapers, couldn't figure that out in ASCII :-)) H = 16.5 mm bit more than 5/8" (total height) I hope the helps instead of confuses... Taran Las
Hoopy, Thanks for that information. I have checked with Clive Kenrick and Caterham parts this morning. The spherical bush which was previously fitted to the De Dion tube was incorrect. My car is an old race car. Caterham said that a spherical bush (harder than Y16) would be acceptable for track only use but would break the tube if used on the road. *eek*Therefore the parts supplied are correct. Once again thanks for your help. Philip. D. Owen Membership No. 3976
Peter Carmichael
I can't see much from the ascii, so I tried enclosing it in [code] markers. Still can't see much. _____ W _____ /_ / _/ / / / / / / hole / / t / / / / H /__/ /__/ D Edited by - Peter Carmichael on 27 Aug 2002 16:02:
scooby dooby doo
the ascii worked ok when i pasted it in - i think its a proportional/non-proportional font conflict. To be honest the "picture" wasn't that clear to me anyway ❗ I think it'll make sense if you are looking at the part in question...
