Miraz
- Car up on axle stands ready for an oil change, gearbox in neutral - start engine to warm the oil up a little - rear wheels start trundling forwards as if the car was in gear - Grab one of the rear wheels (carefully) to see if it is really in gear - Both wheels stop trundling round - Give one wheel a little nudge forwards, and off they go again Is this just normal behaviour that I haven't noticed before? cos I don't think this used to happen last time I did an oil change. Miraz
More convinced now that this is normal behaviour - but wonder why it happens now and never before...
Big Brother
If its any consolation my Astravan also does this (but with the front wheels) Steve www.Se7en-Up.co.uk One day, all cars will be made this way!

Peter Carmichael
The gearbox is permanently meshed, so all you are seeing is the drag of the gears on the shaft. FWIW I reckon it shows that there isn't much friction in the rest of the drivetrain... Of course you aren't supposed to run the engine when on axle stands particularly so that you don't see this sort of discomfiting phenomenon
