R500 Brake Pads

During my recent Llandow experience a comment was made wrt my brakes having little feel and being very hard.

What optional pads should I consider to replace what, I believe, are CC standard pads?

(Apologies because I'm using my Father's profile, so this is a bit cheeky)

On the brake pads we (SPY Motorsport) run several R300s and (previously) R400s in the official Caterham Superlight championships and have naturally tried many different manufacturer's pads over multiple drivers & cars to try to find those with the best pedal feel/consistency.

We have found that:

Despite the huge expense Pagids are very poor after only a couple of track sessions. They become very uncommunicative, and are quite unstable over a race distance - you just can't rely on them, which leads to mistakes and loss of confidence.

Ferodo suffer from very poor communication, particularly around lockup.

Mintex, Performance Friction are unexceptional.

Hawk are very good, with excellent pedal feedback, good pad life, but very aggressive to the disk. They also do not make the backing plate shape for the latest/current AP front calipers, and supply from the states through the limited number of stockist in the UK is patchy.

SO we now use and stock a brand called FRIXA, who are part of Hankook tires. They are a large OEM brake supplier with a specialised motorsport department who normally (and very successfully) create pads for Le Mans, F3, Touring car teams exclusively. We helped develop three compounds (soft/medium/hard) tailored specifically to the Caterham Superlights, I expect the only brake pad manufacturer who has actually done this! The pads have great pedal feedback, partcularly good recovery time (so they always feel consistent between stops), and are very stable across a range of temps. In fact I won in the R400s last year the first time I ran on them :)

Sorry I didn't mean to make that sound like an advert but if you'd like more info get in touch with my brother peter@spy-motorsport.co.uk or me smyoung@ukonline.co.uk

Well I was going to include that above, but I thought I was boring people already :)

Although it wasn't our foremost concern when testing for the racing, impressions are that disk wear is pretty good. They have a very low metallic content compared with most pads.

The other thing I didn't mention is that compatibility following other pads seems good, we have successfully followed Pagid, Hawk, Ferodo with no problems so far. They do benefit from a careful running in period though.

Interesting Simon, I race with Ferodo's DS2500 and find them fantastic, but is always willing to try something different. I agree about the Pagids, not my cup of tea at all *eek*

My front 4 pots and the rear 2 pots (825H) are the early AP versions, who should I talk to about specing up a set of Frixa's?

RoyH you have mail

Pendennis we (SPY) stock the pads for uprated front and rear types in the three compounds and I would be happy to discuss what would be best if you tell me a bit about your car in terms of power, tires, your like etc etc. I'm not sure I'm familiar with the 825H calipers by that name. Do they use this pad type?

Simon, yep they look like the fronts and the rears pads are Ferodo DS2500 version 825H. I am not totally sure but, the fronts are possibly still current AP Caterham 4 pot and the rears are the early AP 2 pot that bolt directly on top of the ear without needing the modern conversion mounting bracket which is currently used by Caterham.

Car is race only, Superlight R S3, but with 2L Duratec circa 260bhp shod this year on ACB10's, though may go back to A11 slicks. I like it hard *redface*
